I saw Jimmy Carter at Manuel’s Tavern years ago- what a great watering hole.
I missed SF’s satellite broadcast- I just could not convince myself to roll out of bed at 8 a.m. to make it down there- I convinced myself it was raining. Sounds like it was fun.
I was with Jimmy Carter at a scholarship fund raising show dress rehearsal that featured heavy satire of local politicians and businesses at the Hyatt Regency when someone whispered to him that Rosalynn (pregnant with Amy) had just gone into labor. Many in our family campaigned for him for Governor and President and one of my cousins was assistant to Attorney General Griffin Bell. We received an invitation to the inauguration and holiday greetings cards from the White House. Years later we now volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

In a May 1962 letter he wrote from Hawaii to his political benefactor in Kenya, Tom Mboya, Barack Obama Sr. discusses his “wife,” but without mentioning Ann Dunham, his Hawaiian bride and the mother of the future president.
Toward the end of the letter, Obama wrote, “You know my wife is in Nairobi there and I would really appreciate any help you may give her.”
Clearly Obama Sr. is referring to his first wife, Kezia Aoko, whom he had married in 1954 at age 18 while she was pregnant with their first child. Obama left Kenya in 1959 to study in Hawaii.

My favorite article about the phenomenon. The story of McArthur Wheeler and his attempt to foil the security cameras by smearing his face with lemon juice is classic.
In one sales training I had a decade ago, they explained a theory of knowledge that had one progressing from unconscious incompetence (stupid and don’t realize you’re stupid), to conscious incompetence (you know what you don’t know) to unconscious competence (you know what to do and don’t have to think about it).
Add unconscious incompetence to a paranoid outlook on life and politics and you end up with tyros arguing with engineers about how steel won’t melt, with aviation experts that Wellstone’s pilot must have been blinded with a high-energy weapon, and birthers arguing with every legal scholar of the past century.
Interestingly, Dunning/Kruger found that tutoring the “grossly incompetent” students even a little raised their ability to assess their own competence. I think that the paranoid mindset short-circuits that effect. It takes the tutoring and distorts it so that it fits with the preconceived paranoid ideas. There might be a research paper somewhere in this.

West wrote that Terrence Lakin, an Army lieutenant colonel, “faces an upcoming court-martial at Fort Meade, Md., on Dec. 14 for refusing to follow orders to redeploy to Afghanistan because of his conviction that the president hasn’t proven his eligibility to hold office.” Lakin is the birthers’ latest hope for promoting their case, and West admits she’s writing about him in part because “Lakin supporters have dubbed this week Terry Lakin Action Week, urging American citizens to take the occasion to call their congressional representatives about the case.”
West highlighted a claim that “unknown, unknowable site authorities took down’ a new entry” on Lakin “almost as soon it went up.” That claim comes straight from the birther fanatics at WorldNetDaily.

An attorney whose legal brief in a case challenging Barack Obama’s eligibility revealed a Supreme Court can remove an ineligible chief executive now has released an analysis confirming that if Obama isn’t eligible, he could be charged under a number of felony statutes.
And that’s just on the federal level; any state charges would be in addition, as would charges against individuals who may have helped him in the commission of any of the acts, according to Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation.

Yes, sure. He was there when he was born, so he should know precisely where that was. Everyone knows exactly where they are the minute they are born, so they can testify to that. And of course everyone knows the citizenship of their parents (if that mattered, for sake of argument) the minute they are born, so they can testify to that.
My earliest proper memories go back until I was about 4 (trip with my parents to Paris), though I have some vague recollections of a hospital stay that predate that time.
So WND actually assumes one would be able to “know for certain” where and to what parent citizenship one was born.
I really wonder what you need to smoke to actually believe this and if so, I want some of that, just for fun.
Sure, you can rely on what your parents tell you or on some records, but according to birther conspiracy religion, you can’t know that for sure, it’s all hearsay. So how could, even within the birthers’ twisted version of reality, Obama know *for sure* that he is not eligible? Hawaii says he was born there. His parents told him he was born there. How could he “know” otherwise, unless there was proof someone with authority told him otherwise?
It’s always funny to see how quickly basic logic and common sense go out the window, even if you try your best to give birthers’ arguments the benefit of the doubt… 🙂

He need but look at his birth certificate to see where he was born, and his passport to determine the status of his citizenship. Having seen both, I can be confident that Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is a US citizen.
this is one of my favorite parts of the birther arsenal. the claim that grandma dunham had used her connections as a bank teller to bribe a health dept worker to produce a fraudulent ( not fake ) birth certificate then place the announcement in the paper. if this were the case then obama and authorities would only have knowledge of him being born in hawaii and all official documentation would back that up. so, for all intent and purposes, obama would be a NBC.

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Radio host Rush Limbaugh is again calling into question the constitutional eligibility of Barack Obama to serve as president, declaring him to be a phony.
“We have an impostor for all intents and purposes serving in the White House,” Limbaugh said today.
The comment from the top-rated host came during his analysis of the disclosure that Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, a purported representative of the Taliban negotiating with the Afghan government, actually turned out to be an impersonator.
Limbaugh said: “The impostor got into the equivalent of the White House in Afghanistan. Did they not ask this guy for some kind of identification? They clearly didn’t. They clearly didn’t ask this guy for his birth certificate. How in the world could they trust in a leader and even give money to somebody who has not been properly vetted? Well, because it happened here in the United States. We have an impostor for all intents and purposes serving in the White House.”
He added, “Do you realize that if this Taliban leader had tried to buy antihistamines from … any kind of drug store, he would have had to produce a photo ID – not to vote, and not to be president – but to buy antihistamines.”

Actually I wonder how many Tea Party candidates actually published their “real” BCs (not just printed certifications). I know, birtherland does not care about the allegiance of their favourite congressional candidates since they need not be NBC by the Constitution. Still…
Besides, as I’ve pointed out before, there is never a “complete investigation” for someone with confirmation bias, just like there is never a “final court ruling” against someone with querulatory disorder (they just want to appeal again and again until “one court finally gets it right”).
Because with every investigation, you’ll have to know when to stop. If I buy a Ferrari but am convinced my seller tricked me and sold me a modified Buick, there are lengths I would not go to. I would maybe have an expert check the chassis number and verify that the car parts appear identical to those typically used on a Ferrari; but if I simply consider them clever forgeries, to convince me you would have to prove this car actually came from a Ferrari factory (and was not built in a Buick factory using forged parts), so you’d have to show me some witnesses. But what if I had doubts these people ever worked for Ferrari in said factory? And so on…
A typical court investigation would have stopped at the expert saying “for all intents and purposes, this is a genuine Ferrari”.
Even if the birthers get “their day in court” and even if SCOTUS itself miraculously decided to review all of Obama’s documents, they would not get what they want, because no sane person would go to the lengths they would go to “investigating”.
Hmm, maybe the Founders also were space aliens and the Constitution is legally void? If that is my premise, no investigation would ever convince me otherwise since all actual evidence is already shrouded in “hearsay”.
So if I redefine “evidence” as “only things I can touch and inspect myself without having to rely on others or records” (“indirect evidence”), I can hardly prove anything, probably not even that I am myself or that my grandparents were actually human beings…
if birfers are still wondering (thanks no doubt to their therapeutically short memories) why their would-be mainstream media messiah insists on playing coy with them, they need only take a quick trip back to june 10, 2009, the day rush batted his eyelashes in their direction for the very first time:

But what strikes me more is that LTC Lakin’s supporters — including, oddly enough, his brother — seem to be unaware that his defense has abandoned the challenge to President Obama’s constitutional eligibility.

not that odd. i tried to think what i’d do in the same scenario and more than likely i’d side-up with supporters of my brother ( even if i believed personally that he royally f’ed-up ). the part i found interesting was the brief part of the interview i heard with lakin’s brother he seemed cautious (imo) when talking about his conversations with terry before he was accused of defying orders. not only is lakin’s brother a doctor but he also had been a lawyer. i’m curious if the defense could use that fact against lakin ( that he had easy access to additional legal advice yet continued on his path ).
