   President Obama said today that Donald Trump and other Republicans who challenge his U.S. citizenship may gain a short-term political benefit with conservative voters, but will suffer with the kinds of independent voters who decide general elections.

   It “creates, I think, a problem for them when they want to actually run in a general election where most people feel pretty confident the President was born where he says he was, in Hawaii,” Obama told ABC News in an interview.

   The president added that he doesn’t “have horns.”

   Obama added: “We may disagree with him on some issues and we may wish that you know, the unemployment rate was coming down faster and we want him to know his plan on gas prices. But we’re not really worrying about conspiracy theories or birth certificates.”

   So they go through this complex effort of finding out everything about Ludwig, then Daniels says the guy isn’t associated with Obama? I must have missed something.

   I don’t try to follow birther reasoning too closely – it’s dangerous and the stupid burns – but my guess is that Daniels is trying to avoid saying anything blatantly wrong while trying to preserve the possibility of future birther business…

   Someone here suggested that the birthers are lacking in reading comprehension skills. I have to say the Jean Paul Ludwig rumor proves that’s true. I think it originated from a misreading of Orly. On March 4, she wrote the following:

   “We get more info on Jean Paul Ludwig, who was born in 1890, had CT SSN obtained in 1976 and died in HI. There are 2 SS numbers for him and records show him dying in 2 different states: CA and HI around 1981.

   “The reason this is important, is because there is a similar fact pattern to Obama. Barack Obama is residing today in the White House, using CT SS number 042-68-4425, issued in CT in and around March 1977 to an elderly individual, who was born in 1890, who is presumed dead and whose death was either never reported to the SS administration or reported and deleted from the database by someone.”

   Her words were copied verbatim onto several web sites with one slight change that made a world of difference; the words “named Jean Paul Ludwig” were inserted after “an elderly individual.”

   Orly never wrote that the “elderly individual” allegedly connected to Obama was the same person as John Paul Ludwig. The birthers simply assumed he was. They can’t even keep the name straight: John Paul, Jean Paul, Sean Paul.
