The longest day

Roundleaf greenbriarToday, of course, is the Summer Solstice, the longest day in the year. I tell you, every day seems long when trying to go through the masses of stuff on birther blogs and news stories about them. It’s like slashing through the sticker vines that I was doing this morning with my new machete I got for my birth day last week. 😉

You hack and slash and all you get for your trouble are blisters, ticks and more sticker vines.

Don’t forget to wear a hockey mask if you want to freak out the neighbors. 😀

So that’s what they are. They look a lot like a new weed growing in our garden-we first saw it about 3 years ago. The stuff we have has a stick fluid and heart shaped leave. I have been on a search to find out what it is. My Oregon arborist sons haven’t seen it although they do know about the stinging nettles we have been dealing with. Maybe.
Our day will be long, maybe a barbeque to celebrate. Have a great day and enjoy after the yard work.

Machetes are fun, but for more permanent satisfaction, take’em down to the dirt and drown’em in glyphosate.

  4. That photo looks a like what I have. It’s a thorny vine.

Looks like sawbriar. My hogs used to love that stuff.

These long days can be disorienting. I go out at 8:30 and it’s dusky, but the sun still hasn’t QUITE gone down yet. I wake up at 7 AM and it’s already past dawn and almost into that mid-morning shine.

Better than the first day of Winter though, when you have to start turning on your headlights at 4:30 in the afternoon and feel like it’s time for bed at 6 PM.

I spent a week in Anchorage in May once. It was glorious! 18 hours of sunlight, with a looooong twilight. Only dark from midnight to 2. I went on an all-night trek. A great place to summer.

The winter, not so much. Sun rises at brunch and sets at tea!

  8. Happy first day of summer, Doc!

I too have a machete (several) and I found it interesting that you use one too. Although I have to to say that most machetes sold in the USA are not very long. I have a 36 inch in RD. And happy late B-day!

Btw, here are a few reports which I have published recently:

“Summer is officially upon us and the senior citizens of the Covert Group are still in custody.”
