Blog features 2

One problem that I haven’t had on the blog is impersonation by commenters. Occasionally we will get two folks commenting under the same common name, but it’s rare and obviously not intentional.; however, I don’t want it to happen in the future and to prevent it, I’ve added features to the blog.

First, as you have no doubt seen, I have added avatars. These small images help commenters create a brand. The avatar is keyed by the private email address you leave on the blog. The avatar is randomly generated, but you can customize it at Gravatar.com. That said, there’s nothing to prevent two people from using the same custom image at Gravatar.

So, I’ve added another feature that prevents anyone from using a name or email address for commenting that matches one already registered to a user here on the site. In order gain this protection, you must create an account at obamaconspiracy.org and then login to comment.  When you login, you can check a “remember me box” to keep you logged in for 30 days. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT JUST TO COMMENT. You may also continue to use OpenID.

When you create an account, you can upload your own avatar here, independent of what you use anywhere else. You can also tell it to use your Twitter avatar.

Commenting is an important part of this site, and I want to get it right.

To really prevent commenting identity theft, could the new system be set up to accept Birth Certificates???

I’ve already become attatched to my system-generated avatar. Heck, who doesn’t like a smiley round face with smart glasses? So I feel like I lucked out and will just stick with that. 🙂

I had trouble registering. I did not receive the email with the password. I checked my spam filter. Maybe I entered my email address incorrectly. Tried to comment with a different email address, but it called me a possible imposter 🙁

To remedy this, I, linda, have changed my name to Sudoku.

True story: When Paul Jensen (any relation to loudspeakers?) was “defending” Lakin, he told Anderson Cooper that anyone could obtain a Hawaii BC.

I googled the transcript and sent this, to both of his e-mail addys: ‘Obtain a Hawaii BC for yourself, and I will donate $10K to Lakin’s defense fund.”

    No response.

  8. Jensen really became a non-person after Lakin’s handlers fired him. If Lakin had told the true story of how he was hooked up with Jensen and convinced to flush his career by his Birther buds I might have actually bought his book.

Doc, have you got a regular log-in button somewhere?

    Doc, you’re a champ.

I completely agree. Also, if Lucas Smith would ever describe an accurate account of his dealings with Orly Taitz, I’d buy that, too.

    Doc,

I registered the name “Slartibartfast” and my email address, but never got sent a password.

Ohhh…Slarit…love the pointy-faced gravatar they gave you! LOL! 😉

  17. Usually problems like this indicate that your email provider is blocking mail from my site, thinking it’s spam.

I asked the system to send you a password reset link, but it could be blocked too. You can do what I did: go to the login form and click the “forgot password link.” I can’t look and see what your password is.

Slarti: I registered the name “Slartibartfast” and my email address, but never got sent a password.

  18. Slarti says:

    Doc,

Well, I checked on my email provider and while a bunch of stuff was mistakenly classified as spam (including a bunch of statements from a new bank account—thanks for making me check on it), but there was nothing from your site. I also subscribed to another post (the one about KBO(no A) outing obots) and I haven’t received emails for the comments made there either. I have no idea what could be happening—the only thing I can think to suggest is that you delete the account “Slartibartfast” and I try to register the name with a different email address.

By the way, I think this is a very cool idea (and I’ve missed the gravatars since you got rid of them along with the comment rating system way back when), but it seems there are still some bugs in the system…

  19. Sudoku says:

I had the same thing happen when I registered. Nothing in the spam filter, never received a password. I reregistered with a different name and email address. I was no longer getting follow up comments, also not in spam filter, but that began some time prior. When I registered with a different email address, I started receiving them again.

  20. Northland10 says:

Everything worked well with mine though the mail service for the email I use here is not all that tough about spam sometimes. Also, I may have whitelisted Doc’s domain some time ago.
