Mother Jones has done an impressive chart of many of the conspiracy theories about Barack Obama, and this puts into perspective how little of the total nuttery about Obama that I actually cover on this blog.
Following the chart is a list of what’s on the chart, with explanation and follow-up hyperlinks. Somebody did a lot of work. You’ll have to visit Mother Jones to see the full-sized chart, but I will include just this one item from among many:
Obama was born in Kenya: In early 2008, fringe theorists began a push to prove Obama was born on foreign soil and was therefore ineligible to live in the White House. The theory gained national attention thanks to the efforts of perennial GOP candidate Alan Keyes, "birther queen" Orly Taitz, and Corsi. Related: Obama’s birth certificate is a fake, he killed his grandmother in Hawaii because she knew the truth, sealed access to his birth certificate and other damning documents, and did pretty much everything horrible you could possibly do for the sake of a phony birth certificate.
I was already familiar with the chart, but one of the commenters here tipped me off about something I didn’t know, that the first and last hyperlinks in that section point to my own Debunker’s Guide to Obama Conspiracy Theories. That was nice!
And still they ignore Orly. 😉

Well, there are any number of things missing from the chart. The claim that Obama lied on his Illinois bar application and that he was disbarred (and that Michelle Obama was disbarred) come to mind. The Debunker’s Guide down at the end lists many that aren’t on the chart.
I can’t recall any President or Presidential candidate in my lifetime who has been the subject of more lies than Barack Obama. It seems like every time I go to Facebook I see postings of both new and old lies about him.
The latest is a photo of Oprah Winfrey with Mitt and Ann Romney which claims to be a photo of Oprah endorsing Romney. Its actually a photo from an interview with the Romneys which appeared in Oprah’s magazine. She endorsed Obama for re-election back in January.
Another new one is the claim that Obama fired a Navy admiral because the admiral wanted to launch an air attack on Benghazi on 9/11/12 but was overruled. One of the many problems with that story is that the admiral’s aircraft carrier was in the vicinity of Guan on 9/11/12. The admiral is under investigation because of unspecified charges of poor judgment.
Also seen recently is the claim that Obama sued to end early voting for military personnel in Ohio. The truth is that Ohio’s Secretary of State tried to limit early voting to military personnel only, and the Obama sued (and won) to open up early voting to everyone.
I could go on, but you get the point.
I know they can’t include everything, but they missed a few of my favorites. Let’s see… missing:
* The stuff about Mr. Obama’s Social Security number – that he has the SS# of a guy born in the 1890s; or that his grandma stole a SS# from someone when she worked in a bank. Never explains why anyone in their right mind would commit fraud with a SS# in their own name. Or why they wouldn’t just make one up if they did.
* Didn’t register for the draft when he was 18. Birthers don’t accept proof that he actually did.
* His birth certificate number isn’t fake but is that of the dead child from Hawaii. I will not mention her family name here because I will not help publicize probably the single sleaziest thing I’ve seen the birthers do.
*The birth announcements are contemporary fakes, and someone changed all of the copies of the microfiche in locations throughout the world where they exist.
* Has had a neural implant/facial surgery/was in a terrible accident/other. This refers to what some say is a scar on the side of Mr. Obama’s head, but which looks (to me) to be due to how he brushes his hair.
* Was a poor student at Columbia and/or Harvard. Almost certainly untrue due to the fact that he wouldn’t have gotten into Harvard with bad grades at Columbia; and wouldn’t have graduated from Harvard with honors if he’s had bad grades.
* Mother/Father/Grandparents were CIA agents.
* Mother is not his mother. Various theories, all are without merit. Additionally, mother could not be his mother because there are no photos of her pregnant. Birthers love the “I haven’t seen it so it doesn’t exist” argument, in spite of the obvious problems with their “theories”.
* His grandfather is his father, and his mother was prostitute from Hawaii; Stanley Ann agreed to raise the baby. Doesn’t merit a rebuttal. No proof whatsoever.
* His mother was an underage pinup/fetish model. This is factually wrong in at least 3 ways.
* Mr. Obama didn’t go to the schools in Hawaii he claims to have gone to. Yearbooks from those schools are faked. “No one” remembers him. Those who do remember him have been threatened into submission.
* His family couldn’t have afforded tuition to schools in Hawaii, Columbia, or Harvard. Birthers have never heard of scholarships, student aid, working through the summer, money from relatives, work-study, or grants.
* Mr. Obama was photo-shopped into the picture of the War Room taken when bin Laden was shot. Silly and stupid.
* He is creating FEMA Camps/arming various government agency members to shoot Americans/round them up/open concentration camps. this is a holdover from Mr. Bush’s presidency. It didn’t happen then, either.
* Will not allow the 2012 elections. Also a holdover from Bush II.
* Has hidden all of his own records, and has spent over $2,000,000.00 doing it. Patently false.
* Has issued over 900 executive orders. Patently false.
* Mr. Obama has threatened and/or bought off every single judge involved in every single birther case. Too dumb for words.
And so on.
