Birther announces military coup

This is not a drill!!! This is not a joke or parody!!! This is real bat guano crazy!

Bobby Powell, yes the same Bobby Powell who organized the million-man “Walk Like an Egyptian” march September 9 to oust President Obama, which no one including Powell attended, has erased that boondoggle from the public awareness by putting forward something even more bizarre, “military coup in progress in Washington D.C. 9/10/2013.”

photo of Bobby PowellI have received information originating from a well-known former General at the Pentagon; everybody knows this guy’s name. This information comes to me second hand, but I consider the go-between to be very reliable.

The information that I have received so far is that five of the US Military’s highest-ranking Generals have met with Barack Obama and warned him that if he orders an attack on Syria he will be arrested and charged with Treason for attempting to provide aid and comfort to our enemies, namely the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front in Syria.

The generals reportedly punctuated that statement with a promise that if he is convicted of Treason, Barack Obama will find himself swinging at the end of a rope at Leavenworth.

This is so over top that I could just let it stand without comment, but I will, however, point out a couple of things for educational purposes.

First, the piece is an appeal to anonymous authority, which is worthless. We don’t know who this “well-known former general” is supposed to be, nor who the reliable go-between is. The “five generals” are also nameless. The meeting doesn’t have a date.

I find the piece insulting to the US Military, who are loyal to the Constitution and have a noble tradition of staying out of domestic politics. While Powell and his right-wing nut job cronies may want to turn the United States into Egypt, I see no such sentiment in our military leadership. The President of the United States can be impeached by the Congress and removed from office, but not tried for a crime while in office. The US Military does not arrest Presidents.

Photo of Anton LeVeyThe hate-filled Powell is a blight on the American landscape. A few Nut job blogs are picking it up—Godlike Productions, PP Simmons and Oppressed Sons.

OK, tell me. Do you think that Powell is going for an Anton LaVey look?

Perhaps because September 9th’s Billion Birther March on Washington DC turned out to be, as all Birther Activities do, a pipe dream fading to an utterly contradicting reality, some Birthers are manufacturing a different imaginary triumph in its place.

Take a deep Birther breath, Dorothy; apparently, Kansas doesn’t even exist anymore.

Carl Gallups’ PPSimmons (a so-called “news” source) ignoring the most basic tenet of journalism, verifying a sensational story before you publish it, has now published the following excerpted story:

… information from a well-known former General at the Pentagon…
… five of the US Military’s highest-ranking Generals have met with Barack Obama and warned him that if he orders an attack on Syria he will be arrested and charged with Treason …..
… with a promise that if he is convicted of Treason, Barack Obama will find himself swinging at the end of a rope at Leavenworth.

Nice try, Birthers! Oh sure, he’s going to be hung in DC at high noon, and then, we’ll all go down to the IHOP and their chef will reverse all of the court cases that have sided with Obama, and then their busboys will authoritatively interpret the United States Constitution.

If one ever needed a perfect example for the “absence of evidence is evidence of absence” fallacy, this would be it.

Via reduction ad absurdum: the fact that Obama hasn’t yet ordered an all-out war against Jupiter proves there was a stealth military coup because the military has told Obama if he attacked Jupiter or used his time machine, he would be ousted. He wasn’t ousted, so he complied, so the secret coup actually took place, q.e.d.

I spent about a half-hour of my life, which I will never ever get back or do again, listening to the ‘latest’ sure thing that is going to bring the usurper to justice. Apparently someone has it on solid grounds that former general Wesley Clark is the source of the ‘Generals rebellion’. It was all rather confusing and it seems that no one knows just which generals are involved and when they are going to bring the hammer down, but ANY DAY NOW.

I don’t know if anyone was aware that one sure way to tell that Obama is a Muslim is that he never has Bo the dog ride with him on Air Force One. Apparently a good Muslim will never allow himself to be in a confined space with and unclean animal. That’s why Bo has his own transportation to the family vacations, etc. A quick google search gave me this.

Bo Obama boards Air Force One for birthday trip to Chicago with President Obama.

I suppose in birfer world that riding in ‘The Beast’ with the President doesn’t count as being in a confined space.

TTIV (The Truth Is Viral) is a blog by Bobby Powell–that’s the same Bobby Powell who was cheer-leading that very successful 9/10 march on Washington, you know, the one where millions of birthers arrived in Washington to take back the government?

In fact, the same day of that epic fail, Powell completely ignored the “march” (which he didn’t attend) and came up with this coup b.s. to keep the donations to this pathetic grift site alive and clicking.

I went to PPSimmons site, and left this comment:

I have talked to my contact in the Mossad, and it’s true. The plan is to take the usurper to Tel Aviv, and have the trial in secret. After the trial, he’ll be given refuge in Saudi Arabia, which gave refuge to Idi Amin cause he too was a Moslem.

I can’t say anything more cause I’ll reveal my contact. I can give my initials so you’ll know this is true.

I suppose that the fellow has jumped from “President is the Commander in Chief” to “President is a military official”, which are of course not synonymous ideas, and therefore arrived at the conclusion that the military has the ability to remove the POTUS.

Or maybe he thinks he’s in Turkey, where the military explicitly has the responsibility to remove the President and dissolve the government if they compromise the secular nature of the state of Turkey.

True. But it seems unfair to single out fringe groups for their lack of fact checking when organizations whose sole purpose is the dissemination of “the news” puts things on the air, even fluff pieces, without properly fact checking them.

If you read that piece as if it was on the Onion and not written by a birther, it is actually pretty good satire on the way the news media uses anonymous sources.

In a reply to a commenter at 7:59 this morning, Powell added a few more details:

“There’s this guy Drake that I outed last year, always has big promises but never delivers. I felt this report was different for two reasons. One, I trust Kathy. Two, this one was different because the source can be traced back to General Clark and not some nameless ‘White Hat.'”

OK, anybody have a clue about who “Kathy” is? And presumably he means Gen Wesley Clark, former NATO commander & Democratic presidential candidate.

Who would like to plunge into this steaming pile & come up with some answers?

The generals reportedly punctuated that statement with a promise that if he is still making me angry, he will find himself swinging at the end of a rope at Leavenworth and more importantly, first he will have to come and stay at my house for a few weeks and see how long he can stand to be treated the way my family treats me since he usurped and all, and not only that, but the Generals also said in no uncertain terms that I, Poppy Bowel, am right about the Constitution and everything like that.

All Obots are anti-birthers, but not all anti-birthers are Obots.
But being perpetually confused is something birthers do better than anyone else.
I’m not an Obama supporter, I was when I voted for him in ’08, but wasn’t pleased with the underwhelming job he did, so I voted for a third party candidate in ’12. That said I have respect for the office of the President of the United States. I really didn’t like Bush’s tenure, but I never once ran around trying to defame him, cry for impeachment, imprisonment, execution, or anything else birthers have wet dreams about doing to Obama.
I wanted Bush out of office, so I did what a sensible person did in ’04. I voted for someone else! When that didn’t get the job done, I hunkered down and waited for Bush’s 2nd term to be over. Why can’t people like you do that? Just wait it out.

Let’s see…so much insanity, where to start..

The ACLU has a ‘targeted assassination’ plan? Why haven’t you contacted the police instead of hosting the assassin in your show. Isn’t that aiding and abetting a felony? Not only is that a crime, that’s a mortal sin, and I think Jesus would send you to hell for doing that.

Child murdering…I think you must really love reading those old copies of “Der Sturmer,” don’t you. What do you think of Streicher’s fascination with pornography?

You’re trying to save lives and win souls for Jesus by threatening violent sedition and revolution? Where did Jesus talk of violent revolution? Didn’t he die for our sins?

  92. You people are just sick. I’ll leave you alone to your little circle jerk.

Yeah, I love how these faux-Christians always wrap themselves in the cover of religion to excuse their ugly hate-based nature. What they call for and what the lessons of their “faith” are supposed to be about are opposites. Shame on him.

If his wife truly is in ill health, then I am of course sympathetic to that situation. But that doesn’t excuse the extreme moral wrongness of what he’s calling for.

  103. CarlOrcas says:

misha marinsky: It fizzled out. Powell didn’t want to be late for dinner.

    Priorities.

  104. Keith says:

Kiwiwriter: You are a shame unto the Lord and a disgrace to Christianity!

    I disagree entirely.

Just because someone mixes the name of the Lord into his sentences like sand on a beach doesn’t mean that person is a Christian.

Christians are not Christians just because they say they are Christians. Christianity is a way of living, not a collection of bumper sticker phrases to be used as rhetorical weapons.

The only time Jesus got mad and called people bad names was when he threw the moneychangers off the Temple grounds. Even then he didn’t call them ‘murdering pigs’, just ‘robbers’ or ‘thieves’, and basically he just told them to go away.

The central tenet of virtually every religion on Earth is the Golden Rule as expressed in the language of that religion. Anyone who calls themselves religious in any way, and yet has not concept of the phrase “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” or its corollary “do not do to others what you would not have them do unto you” is lying to themselves and others.

To claim Christ’s authority to spew hatred and/or perform hateful acts is despicable, anti-social, and, in many cases, quite probably psychotic. What it certainly is not is Christian, and Christians should not be embarrassed by ‘faux’-Christians behaving in a non-Christian manner.

Of course this also means that Muslims should not be embarrassed by ‘faux’-Muslims behaving in a non-Christian manner. But we all know that every person that calls themselves a Muslim is a blood thirsty terrorist and wants to eat the babies of innocent Christians, don’t we? Otherwise why aren’t the ‘moderates’ speaking up more to marginalize the faux-Muslims?

What Christians should be embarrassed about is their silence. Christians should speak up more when these liars and hypocrites spout their filthy creed. Why aren’t these people called out, Christians need to explain that these spawn of Satan are not Christians and are taking the name of the Christ in vain and are the true opposite of what Christianity stands for.

Some references from Wikipedia on the Golden Rule:

    Christianity:
According to Simon Blackburn, although the Golden Rule “can be found in some form in almost every ethical tradition”, the rule is “sometimes claimed by Christianity as its own”.[51] The “Golden Rule” has been attributed to Jesus of Nazareth: “Therefore all things whatsoever would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them” (Matthew 7:12, see also Luke 6:31). The common English phrasing is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. A similar form appeared in a Catholic catechism around 1567 (certainly in the reprint of 1583).[52] The Golden Rule also has roots in the two old testament edicts, found in Leviticus 19:18 (“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself”; see also Great Commandment) and Leviticus 19:34 (“But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God”).

    Luke 10:25-28

25And one day an authority on the law stood up to put Jesus to the test. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”

26What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you understand it?” 27He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength and with all your mind.’(Deuteronomy 6:5) And, ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ ”
28“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do that, and you will live.”.

    Confucianism:
Zi gong (a disciple of Confucius) asked: “Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?”
The Master replied: “How about ‘shu’ [reciprocity]: never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself?”

(Note: Confucius was 500 years BEFORE the similar story in Luke)

    Hinduism:
One should never do that to another which one regards as injurious to one’s own self. This, in brief, is the rule of dharma. Other behavior is due to selfish desires.
—Brihaspati, Mahabharata (Anusasana Parva, Section CXIII, Verse 8)

    Humanism:
Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you. [is] (…) the single greatest, simplest, and most important moral axiom humanity has ever invented, one which reappears in the writings of almost every culture and religion throughout history, the one we know as the Golden Rule. Moral directives do not need to be complex or obscure to be worthwhile, and in fact, it is precisely this rule’s simplicity which makes it great. It is easy to come up with, easy to understand, and easy to apply, and these three things are the hallmarks of a strong and healthy moral system. The idea behind it is readily graspable: before performing an action which might harm another person, try to imagine yourself in their position, and consider whether you would want to be the recipient of that action. If you would not want to be in such a position, the other person probably would not either, and so you should not do it. It is the basic and fundamental human trait of empathy, the ability to vicariously experience how another is feeling, that makes this possible, and it is the principle of empathy by which we should live our lives.
—Adam Lee, Ebon Musings, “A decalogue for the modern world”

    Islam
“…and you should forgive And overlook: Do you not like God to forgive you? And Allah is The Merciful Forgiving.”
    — Qur’an (Surah 24, “The Light,” v. 22)

A Bedouin came to the prophet, grabbed the stirrup of his camel and said: O the messenger of God! Teach me something to go to heaven with it. Prophet said: “As you would have people do to you, do to them; and what you dislike to be done to you, don’t do to them. Now let the stirrup go! [This maxim is enough for you; go and act in accordance with it!]”
    —Kitab al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 146

    Jainism:
The following quotation from the Acaranga Sutra sums up the philosophy of Jainism:

Nothing which breathes, which exists, which lives, or which has essence or potential of life, should be destroyed or ruled over, or subjugated, or harmed, or denied of its essence or potential. In support of this Truth, I ask you a question – “Is sorrow or pain desirable to you ?” If you say “yes it is”, it would be a lie. If you say, “No, It is not” you will be expressing the truth. Just as sorrow or pain is not desirable to you, so it is to all which breathe, exist, live or have any essence of life. To you and all, it is undesirable, and painful, and repugnant.

    Judaism:
The Golden Rule originates in a well-known Torah verse (Hebrew: “ואהבת לרעך כמוך”):

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
    —Leviticus 19:18

    (Misha likes to quote Hillel:)
“That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn.”
    —Talmud, Shabbat 31a

    Mohism:
If people regarded other people’s families in the same way that they regard their own, who then would incite their own family to attack that of another? For one would do for others as one would do for oneself.
    —Mozi

    Platonism:
One should never do wrong in return, nor mistreat any man, no matter how one has been mistreated by him.”
    —Plato’s Socrates (Crito, 49c) (c. 469 BC–399 BC)

    Taoism:
The sage has no interest of his own, but takes the interests of the people as his own. He is kind to the kind; he is also kind to the unkind: for Virtue is kind. He is faithful to the faithful; he is also faithful to the unfaithful: for Virtue is faithful.
    —Tao Teh Ching, Chapter 49

  105. Arthur says:

Bobby Powell is a lying, grifting, blowhard. Evidence? Well, there’s nothing like using a scoundrel’s own words to indict him. Here are portions of a July 27 post from his blog in which he describes what he’ll do in Washington D.C. on September 9:

“On September 9th millions of Americans will gather in Washington D.C. to let their Congressmen and Senators know that they are sick and tired of the crimes being committed by the Obama administration . . .”

“There are several groups of Patriots, and the number of groups increases every day, that are planning to descend on Washington D.C. throughout the month of September. Each has an agenda that may or may not coincide with the plans of The Truth Is Viral; but we are unconcerned with the plans of others. We have a plan of our own.

“I will be making a packet of information available to the viewers of this program which will include a 200 point affidavit presented to the Alabama Supreme Court by Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Cold Case Posse . . .

“I intend to personally present this packet of information to Dan Beneshek, my elected Representative in Congress, and to my Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow. I am encouraging everyone who reads this to do the same. While I am there I also intend to point out to Senator Levin, one of the architects of the NDAA, that every single State Representative and State Senator in Michigan has voted to nullify the indefinite detention provision in the NDAA.

“I am going to ask Senator Levin how he can support the NDAA when the People of the State of Michigan, through the UNANIMOUS vote of their state-level representatives, have told him to shove it.

“After I have thoroughly shamed my own representatives I am going to take a stroll to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Anyone wishing to walk with me is welcome to do so, but I am not calling this a ‘march,’ ‘demonstration,’ or ‘protest’ because permits are not needed for American citizens simply wishing to visit the nation’s Capitol.

“I am probably going to have to get a permit to set up my sound system in front of the White House, but that’s just me. Once I set up I am going to speak Truth to Power, cranking up the volume as high as it can go to make sure that Barack Obama hears me when I call him out. He is NOT going to be happy with what I have to say.

“In order to get to Washington D.C. though, I need your help. The $2,200 it is going to cost me to rent a vehicle and get to D.C. and back with my gear is equal to more than 2 months of my Social Security Disability income. I will gladly throw my own body on the gears to ensure a future for my children and grandchildren, but I need you to get me to the machine.

“If you want to watch me take it to those in Washington D.C. that are purposely trying to destroy this country, click one of the Paypal buttons at the top right of this page and give until it hurts. I have given everything I own to keep TTiV on the air, even taking a cut in my disability income, food stamps, and completely losing my Medicaid.

“I have nothing left to give but my body, and I will gladly put that on the line if it means I can save my children, and yours, from having to live in a totalitarian, Islamophilic, Communist dictatorship. I believe that Father saved me for this final battle, and that He is using me – and you – to save lives and win souls for Him before Christ returns to put an end to this BS once and for all.”

    and

“As Hillel the Elder had stated, whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.”

A Gentile wag asked that the Torah be explained to him while he stood on one foot; everyone else dismissed the man. Hillel chided the man for his behavior, but in a constructive way:

“What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn”

I believe that Father saved me for this final battle, and that He is using me – and you – to save lives and win souls for Him before Christ returns to put an end to this BS once and for all.”

  108. G says:

BRAVO on every word and example in your post!!! I just captured and highlighted the thesis points to restate their impact.

Keith: Just because someone mixes the name of the Lord into his sentences like sand on a beach doesn’t mean that person is a Christian.

  115. I’m going to mention your cute little blog on my show. The “Ming the Merciless” comment still has me cracking up. LOL.

As part of that show I’d like to give you guys your say too. Does anyone, including (ESPECIALLY) the owner of this blog, have the balls or the intellect to stand up against me in a live debate?

Anyone wishing to come on to The Truth Is Viral as a guest can send their information to newstips@ttiv.net. You MUST have a Skype account with video chat capabilities and be willing to debate me under your real name. Other than that, I’ll take on any one of you in an intellectual debate.

    Got the chops?

    Got the balls?

As far as me collecting disability, I paid for my disability insurance with the taxes I paid by working 2 jobs for twenty years, including a tour in the Marine Corps. I EARNED every penny I receive and, unlike many, I’m trying as hard as I can to recover from injuries that left me in a wheelchair for three years unable to read, write, or speak properly.

Am I writing that for sympathy? LOL, from YOU LOT? People like you have threatened to burn my children to death while they sleep in their beds and gang rape my terminally ill wife so I don’t expect any sympathy from you. That was a warning. I’m no wimp.

It took 8 surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy to get me back in the game. More importantly, I’ve been healed in ways doctors can’t explain, so I know God is working in my life. He has restored my abilities so that I can take part in this final battle. When I speak, I speak for Him.

You want to take me on? Bring it.

  116. Bring it.

Oh, I’m sure if Doc or any one else accepts your challenge, you’ll back out at the last minute. Seems par for the course.
I bet your wife is wishing she was dead already, just so she wouldn’t have to put up with you. If she saw the way you’re acting, she’d probably try to hurry things along out of shame.

What, you think that because you have a faux-radio show that you’re special? This is the internet age, everyone and their brother has a blog, internet radio show, youtube channel. What makes you so remarkable? Before this article I had never even heard of you!

And if you think for one minute that God actually smiles on people who abuse and pervert his name, the way you do, boy are you in for a shock.

  119. Bovril says:

You really don’t get it, do you..?

You rail and wax incoherently about Obama, the evils of his socialist programs including “Obamacare” whilst supping deeply from those very “socialist” programs you so plainly hate.

You are aware I trust that the relative pittance you paid into the system doesn’t even come close to actually PAYING for the resources you are sucking from the system..?

I am also curious as to how, and I see no reason to believe you’re a liar, that you on the one hand served this country as a member of the miltary, with the requirements, expectations and duty to follow the law, the UCMJ and the Constitution and yet call for seditious, nay treasonable activity by the military against the C in C and the civilian government of this country?

Where I come from that makes you at BEST a Blue Falcon.

Along with a number of other posters on this specific forum, I also served, I, in point of fact was medically discharged after significant head trauma in action. If my brain bucket had been an inch higher on my skull I wouldn’t be here today.

As such, you and your ilk truly disgust and shame those of us who have served and truly support this country and its institutions.

There’s nothing to debate, Bobby. By your own words you are a deluded liar and petty ante grifter. You beg for money to attend an event and then you don’t even go. You think government handouts are bad unless you’re receiving them. You believe that Russian troops are fighting militias in rural Michigan. You believe in UFO conspiracies. You believe that every helicopter that flies near your house is out to get you. You believe a video of Wesley Clark from 2007, in which he describes the way neocons in the George H. and George W. Bush administrations were corrupting military policy to enable an invasion of Iraq is really describing an actual coup d’etat taking place right now.

You can’t tell the difference between reality and the fetid delusions of your twisted imagination. An intellectual debate? Once you begin to demonstrate that you possess an intellect (as opposed to the paranoid blathering on your blog) I might consider it. Until then, Bobby, you’re only worthy of censure and ridicule.

  122. Arthur says:

You may well find someone to come on your show. But I’m not quite sure what’s to debate, other than politics.

The “forgery” allegations have been shown to be false again and again and again. Likewise, birthers have repeatedly shown they don’t have the facts behind them, just a bunch of circular logic, assumptions, belligerence against reality and name-calling of anyone who points out the truth.

I can only assume that anyone who comes on your show would only be subjected to more of the same. But frankly, anyone who knows anything who comes on your show would be doing you the favor of giving you more credibility than you deserve. And when it comes to debate, again I’m not sure what’s to debate, since as far as I know you haven’t contributed any meaningful analysis to the whole thing at all.

Or even debatable analysis, whether meaningful or not.

You want to take me on? Bring it.

I thought you had no intention of debating “sick people.” Why would you want to debate “sick people?” Doesn’t sound like much of a debate…especially when we call you out on your lies, grifting, and gutter language.

I thought you were going to leave us alone, to our…what was it? Oh, yes. “Circle jerk.” But you came back anyway, and challenged us about our manhood and courage? Didn’t Jesus talk about the power of meekness, and about turning the other cheek? About using love and nonviolence to win over enemies?

You talk about violent revolution in the grand terms and attack your opponents for their manhood and sexuality on the small scale. Doesn’t sound like the God of the New Testament. Or the Old Testament, either. Has God become an angry racist, who hates all of His children? When did God change this plan? Do you have any Documentation on his new plans? Some Revelatory document? Did you have a chat with Him on a mountaintop? Did He present you with a new set of Commandments to overturn the previous 10?

How do you know God is not speaking to us? What does God think about your manifold lies and deceits? Doesn’t the Bible give fierce punishment to liars? How do you think God will judge you and your dying wife when He holds you accountable for your behavior?

Maybe you should go back and re-read the Sermon on the Mount before you go screeching hysterically at us like an overheated adolescent. Christ did not insult his opponents, challenge their manhood, threaten their lives, beg for money, lie to the public, or call for violence. He begged for forgiveness for his enemies, and called for justice, love, and peace.

    I don’t think you’re much of a Christian.

Here’s an irony for you…Muslims are often more familiar with Christianity than Christian folks…because Christianity is a basis for Islam, so they study it with a good deal of intensity. When Iraqi troops captured the famous British SAS patrol in 1991, they were convinced the captive Britons were Jews. The Britons said they were Christians. So the Iraqis grilled them with questions about esoteric topics like the lives of the early saints. Naturally, the British troops had no idea of the significance of St. Swithin — the Iraqis did. The Britons convinced the Iraqis they weren’t Jews, which may have saved their lives.

I think you need to learn more about your religion, and a little less about how to manage a Paypal account and a radio station.

You certainly need to learn a great deal about civil behavior and ordinary politeness.

And as I said before, I am truly saddened by your wife’s condition, and absolutely do NOT regard hurling rape and death threats as an appropriate means of communication or debate. Nobody should sink to that level, either. I hope that you have taken appropriate action to address these calls and threats…I will certainly disabuse anyone I know from making them. However, I don’t know any such people, so there isn’t much I can do, but agree that such behavior is wrong.

  129. Kiwiwriter says:

Absolutely…Chris preached humility. But God is probably often astonished at the people who claim to be His biggest supporters…with friends like those, God doesn’t need Satan.

Well, THAT was an odd comment.

People like those posting at this forum? I’m certainly not aware of anyone here who has made even a threat to call the police on Mr. Powell or toilet-paper his house, let alone commit vile and horrendous crimes against him and his family.

And if anyone came even remotely close to suggesting such a thing, I have no doubt the good Doc would immediately show them the door.

Getting kind of like, majorly unhinged there, aren’t we, Bobby?

Oh. And you can add me to the list of those who aren’t at all impressed with your “Christianity.” And I speak as someone who knows a fair bit about the subject.

  134. Andrew Vrba, PmG says:

No, but I could easily see how someone would be tempted to call the men in white coats on him.

  135. Publius says:

In fact, we have some members of this forum even gently rebuking another member for a comment that was, well, not perhaps in the best of taste.

Ah, but you have to demonize your “opponents.”

Which is to say, those of us who are kind enough to tell you the truth. (Even if we don’t always do so with the politest of manners.)

Because if you don’t demonize those who don’t agree with the birther nonsense, then you might get stripped of the birther fantasies that you so dearly want to cling to.

You see, we might just understand you a bit better than you realize.

They’re about as Christian as Arpaio was “wanting to clear the President”.

Too many people have invented their own “do as thou wilt” framework and just slapped on the label of Christianity (“God wants me to do it”).

  146. Crustacean says:

Keith: The only time Jesus got mad and called people bad names was when he threw the moneychangers off the Temple grounds

    Hi Keith,

I agree with that comment, at least as it pertains to Jesus the Christ. But Jesus the man from Galilee was a Jewish zealot and a rebel who opposed Roman rule as well as the Temple priests and the wealthy Jewish aristocrats whose homes he quite possibly – probably? – helped build in the city of Sepphoris.

Given the circumstances of his birth, the times in which he lived, and the fact that he was executed for the crime of sedition, it’s likely he engaged in more violent activities than just frog-marching a few money-changers out of the Temple.

As Reza Aslan writes in his book, “Zealot: the Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth,” the real Jesus “bears little resemblance to the image of the gentle shepherd cultivated by the early Christian community.” Is Aslan the definitive authority on all things Jesus? Of course not, but he makes a fairly compelling case, and he’s not the first scholar to make this case.

So while Mr. Powell may not be acting as a good Christian, his rebellious anger, perhaps, is not completely unlike that of the most famous of Nazarenes.

Doc, you’ve read his blog. Maybe you’ve even seen his videos on YouTube. I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that Bobby Powell would “play fair” in a debate. I don’t necessarily believe he’s an evil person, but it’s clear that he has some kind of mental disorder that would make attempts at a rational exchange of facts and arguments impossible.

Debating Mr. Powell would be like debating Nancy Owens Barger–I just don’t see any value to it.

Yes, that is who I was discussing, that is who the Christian faith is based upon, and who the faux-Christians are pretending to follow..

Jesus the man, within the context of the times and as a personality outside of the mythology, is not recorded, only inferred. I haven’t read Aslan’s book yet, but I hear good things about it. I doubt that he has examples of Jesus exploding in anger and calling people names though.

  158. You can perhaps translate yourself into it.

“Damn you, Chorazin! Damn you, Bethsaida! If the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sydon, they would have sat in sackcloth and ashes and changed their ways long ago. But Tyre and Sidon will be better off at the judgment than you. And you, Capernaum, you don’t think you’ll be exalted to heaven, do you? No, you’ll go to Hell.”

    Luke 10:13-14 SV

Keith: I haven’t read Aslan’s book yet, but I hear good things about it. I doubt that he has examples of Jesus exploding in anger and calling people names though.

  159. Crustacean says:

Keith: Yes, that is who I was discussing, that is who the Christian faith is based upon, and who the faux-Christians are pretending to follow..

I apologize, Keith. My comment reads like I’m lecturing you, which was not my intent (and it would be inappropriate, anyway, since, not only am I not a religious scholar, I haven’t even finished Aslan’s book yet! I’m just a silly crab with a keyboard).

I did get your point, however. Mine was just to say how ironic it is that someone who would surely reject the notion that Jesus was nothing more than an extraordinary man might actually have more in common with the man (less the extraordinary part) than the Christ he makes such a show of worshipping.

Why Jesus’s having been an extraordinary man isn’t enough for some folks is a bit of a mystery to me, though I try not to be one of those snooty, smarty-pants atheists. I envy believers a little. I mean, I’d love to believe that I’m going to see my mom again, but I can’t.

Oh crap, my eye stalks are starting to leak…

  160. Keith says:

Kiwiwriter: I was mostly attacking his failure to uphold the standards of his faith, not saying that Christianity was wrong or evil…someone who goes out saying he’s trying to save lives and souls for Christ should NOT descend into the latrine to make his point.

I understand your point. My point is that he isn’t a Christian, so his behavior cannot be construed as embarrassing to Christianity. I was not trying to say anything about Christianity one way or the other.

We don’t consider the actions of faith-healers as a ‘disgrace to the Medical profession’, even if that faith-healer calls himself (or herself) a ‘doctor’, do we?

  161. Keith says:

    Dr. Conspiracy:
You can perhaps translate yourself into it.

“Damn you, Chorazin! Damn you, Bethsaida! If the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sydon, they would have sat in sackcloth and ashes and changed their ways long ago. But Tyre and Sidon will be better off at the judgment than you. And you, Capernaum, you don’t think you’ll be exalted to heaven, do you? No, you’ll go to Hell.”

    Luke 10:13-14 SV

If I read the context correctly, that quote is Jesus instructing his advance party on how to convince reluctant towns to receive him. He is not angry and is not calling people names. He is discussing tactics.

I think he’s just suggesting that those reluctant towns be told that they are so sinful that even Tyre and Sidon, two well known dens of inequity, would be embarrassed, and, of course, Jesus can help sort them out.

Kind of like a mother telling her daughter that she dresses worse than a Los Vegas hooker and why don’t you go back to your room and put on some proper clothes.

as voltaire said: “those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”

I’m with you on all these points. I have no idea where his paranoid mind is coming up with this stuff, but the behavior he describes is certainly NOT the behavior displayed by regular participants of this forum, nor tolerated by the administrator or any of us, so it is certainly not “people like us” that would act like that. Considering the bizarre mentality and nonsense he displays, I am cynical that the comments he described even happened, except in his own perverse imagination…or are at best, quite a vulgar exaggeration. But hey, it gives him another faux-excuse to justify his own hate and bad behavior towards others. Mere projection, more likely.

Publius: Well, THAT was an odd comment.

  164. aarrgghh: as voltaire said: “those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”

aarrgghh: in defending christianity or any self-indentified and self-selecting group of individuals, one must be careful to avoid falling into a “no true scotsman” argument.

I agree, and I recognize that, taken to its extreme, my opinion can indeed fall into the “no true Scotsman” problem, and as I sit here typing this comment, I am having trouble reconciling my previous assertions with that recognition in a coherent manner.

All I can say is that I do “believe” that there are certain people that use the trappings of Christianity to justify their very un-Christian behavior (not unChristian-like but absolutely unChristian). While there is a lot of room in the definition of what is and what is not Christianity and Christian behavior, I cannot accept people who, for example, preach hatred and bigotry as their fundamental belief structure as ‘Christians’. Preaching hate is not unChristian-like, it is unChristian period, and as I pointed out in my earlier comment, it is unIslamic, unJewish, unJainish, unHindu, unVirtuallyAnyReligionYouWantToName.

Of course, my acceptance or rejection of anybody as Christian or not has no bearing on anything or anyone outside my own head.

  170. Publius says:

And if you’re trying to say that Hitler was doing what he was doing on behalf of the “kingdom of Christ,” the claim is simply false.

All it takes is a brief look at wikipedia for some documentation of the falsity of the claim:

Baptized and confirmed as a child in Austria, he ceased to participate in the sacraments after childhood. In adulthood, Hitler became disdainful of Christianity, but in seeking out and in trying to retain power in Germany, he was prepared to restrain his radical instincts out of political considerations. It is generally believed by historians that Hitler’s post war and long term goal was the eradication of Christianity in Germany. Various scholars consider Hitler’s final religious position to be one of deism. Some have used the terminology that he did not “believe in God”, others that he was “atheist”. The question is debated. During his early career, and for a variety of reasons, he made various comments against atheistic (ie “Bolshevik”) movements, and in favour of so-called positive Christianity (a movement which purged Christianity of its Jewish elements and instilled it with Nazi philosophy). In private, confidantes such as Martin Bormann, Joseph Goebbels and Albert Speer noted that he was hostile to Christianity (though Speer also wrote that he never formally left the Church).

The quote remains both false and offensive.

  171. OK guys, the referee is calling foul here for an off topic violation. I had taken “Hitler” off the moderation keyword list because the term wasn’t being abused, but this is exactly the kind of discussion that goes on interminably and gets heated and is not what this web site is about.

I got hung up in this discussion years ago on USENET and I know where it goes. If anyone is interested, here is the article I wrote on the topic way back then. However, if you want to discuss it, find someplace else.

    That’s a good essay.

It is my understanding that the poster of the quote is Jewish. Assuming I’m correct in that understanding, I find it ironic that he seems to be engaging in the same kind of behavior that has at some points in history been directed against those of his own faith: Pick a religion not your own, and attempt to characterize it as the source of all the world’s ills.

  174. G says:

Yes, that was a really good essay and interesting reading. I found the Conclusion, in its entirety, to be an excellent summary and rational conclusion of the findings:

    Conclusions

It is an established historical fact that Hitler was baptized a Roman Catholic and confirmed at age 15, and that Hitler never formally and publicly left the Catholic Church.

Hitler considered himself religious, but had only contempt for organized religion and the teachings of the church about Jesus. Hitler had his own private view of Jesus, that of an economic revolutionary and Jew hater. So in some twisted sense Hitler thought he was acting in the tradition of Jesus. If the question is, “can someone read the New Testament and then go off and do horribly bad things?” then the answer is yes. If the question is “was Hitler in the tradition of mainstream Christianity” then the answer is no.

The problem of saying “Hitler was a Christian” when by “Christian” is meant something totally different from normal usage and historical context, is that the sentence ceases to mean anything. One might as well have said “Hitler was a Zorb” because the last word is meaningless. The only “value” in saying “Hitler was a Christian” with an iconoclastic meaning for “Christian” is as a tool of anti-Christian propaganda towards the end of misleading people.

    Thanks for sharing that, Doc!

Do you think the Pope would talk that way? Bishop Fulton Sheen? Billy Graham? Pat Robertson? Jerry Falwell? Well, Jimmy Swaggart and Jimmy Bakker might, but they both apologized, in tears, for that behavior.

You are a shame unto the Lord and a disgrace to Christianity!
