I was asked the question whether the Dr. Deb (drdebdrdeb) commenter at Birther Report had accused me of hacking her email account. (I certainly didn’t hack it, and I have no reason to think anyone else did.) Dr. Deb didn’t say that I hacked her, but she did say that “Soros and tax funded Obots” hacked her and have tapped her phone and are taping her calls. Dr. Deb sees a vast conspiracy of Soros and the Obama administration that includes hacking and even murder. She says that Linda Jordan, Orly Taitz, Doug Vogt, Mike Volin, Martha Trowbridge, Joe Arpaio and Mike Zullo have had their computers hacked too and are in danger of losing their very lives.
Looking at comments at Birther Report, I find a community that will believe almost anything about alleged government misconduct. The word that comes to my mind is “traumatized” to describe their reaction to a continual onslaught of fear-laced stories about a regime that is out to get decent people. They are too traumatized to think rationally and critically about the stories they comment on. For them, government hacking of their email accounts is one of the milder points on their paranoid landscape.

I just checked and saw something dated today. She has been hacked [] by Google. I was able to view the site on Mozilla Firefox.
I am concerned about government surveillance too, and I know that the NSA did collect telecommunications metadata, probably mine along with everybody else’s, and that the USA Patriot Act allows things that I wouldn’t agree with. Still, Dr. Deb, based on her online persona, doesn’t appear to be a threat to anybody, and certainly not the Obama administration. It looks to me like she he just acting paranoid.
1Sharyl Attkisson was a CBS News reporter who claims that her personal and work computers were compromised by some unauthorized access. The Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General did a forensic analysis of her iMac computer, and concluded that there was no evidence of unauthorized access to her computer. Attkisson and CBS News refused to provide to the DOJ what they claimed were independent forensic reports showing unauthorized access and alteration of file stamps on logs. The video showing characters disappearing on her computer screen was likely a stuck backspace key. There was no allegation that anything had been “inserted” into it to get her into trouble.
Dr. Deb Curlette is another example who proves the point that someone can earn a PhD yet display the critical thinking skills of a six year old child when it comes to an area where they have a strong confirmation bias. We’ve seen it time again with Birthers. Hermie comes to mind.
And I suppose that one might speculate about a degenerative brain disorder such as Huntington’s Disease.
I am aware of a criticism that could be leveled against this article, and against much of what goes for debunking of conspiracy theory theories. The only fact I assert is that I didn’t hack her email account. I know that for sure. Ridicule or skepticism really isn’t an argument that proves that she didn’t get hacked by someone, and that her phone really isn’t tapped.
Debunking wasn’t the purpose of the article anyway. What I can say is that I cannot find any plausible reason for the government to tap her phone unless she is involved in things that we don’t know about, and she offered no evidence that her emails were hacked and her phone tapped.
This thread reminds me to complain about hacking the next time one of my posts goes into moderation.
On a more serious note, for the past couple of months I have been watching episodes of the 1950s television show I Led 3 Lives. For those who haven’t heard of it, the show was based upon the best-selling book of the same name by Herbert Philbrick. Philbrick was an advertising man in Massachusetts who joined the Communist Party after World War II and became a counterspy for the FBI.
The show is fascinating because every character in it is convinced that there are Commies lurking everywhere. The paranoia runs deep, and in the show the Commies are just as paranoid as the good citizens. The Commies don’t trust each other and they frequently put their members under surveillance to make sure that they aren’t “deviating.” They are so unpleasant that you wonder why anyone would want to belong to the party in the first place.
The similarities to the paranoia demonstrated by birthers are striking. I suspect that the people who were spreading fear about Jade Helm are the same people who were saying twenty years ago that Bill Clinton’s black helicopters were coming to seize everyone’s guns. Living a life which is defined by irrational fear certainly doesn’t appeal to me.
Actually, they secretly installed a chip on all guns that allows them to be disabled by remote radio control.
I’m reliably informed that the button to activate that is in the upper right hand drawer of Obama’s desk.

1- You know the NSA under Obama collected info.. You trust was metadata including yours.
You infer paranoia as a diagnosis ( fear without cause or reason) for those who have had the unlawful action of benign surveillance upon them.
You are not concerned or outraged about the cost of such surveillance as a tax payer?

It was my intent to distinguish between acting paranoid and being paranoid. I don’t mean to diagnose. I am not qualified to do that.
You know what else makes sense? Someone proclaiming to be a candidate to actually appear on a ballot.
As an aside, there’s a good argument saying that scripture is a copyist’s error and that the correct wording is “:Enoch descended” rather than “he descended.” Apparently they are visually similar in the Greek.
The Book of Enoch was familiar to early Christians and it describes Enoch visiting the lost souls in Hell and speaking words of encouragement to them.
“Fear ye not, ye souls of the righteous, And be hopeful ye that have died in righteousness. 5 And grieve not if your soul into Sheol has descended in grief. And that in your life your body fared not according to your goodness. But wait for the day of the judgement of sinners and for the day of cursing and chastisement” (1 Enoch 102:4-5).
She reaches some sort of low point when she believes net neutrality has some connection to surveillance.
I’d have to say that, among politically divisive issues, the one least understood by partisans on both sides is net neutrality. It appears that the majority of people who are sure it’s a good or bad thing don’t understand what it is.
But believing it is a form of spying takes the misunderstanding to a new level.
It does for Atkisson. She even framed the shot so that the backspace key was not in view. And she actually believes a hacker would take minutes to erase a text using the backspace key (which is almost guaranteed to be detected) instead of just erasing the text with select+delete, or deleting the entire file.
I’ve had stuck space keys on many keyboards and it never once occurred to me this would be a hacker trying to mess with my data.
I returned my latest keyboard because of a stuck shift key; I wasn’t assuming the government was trying to turn me into a SHOUTING OLD MAN. 😉
Net neutrality is the best example of how conservatives are against something simply and only because Obama is for it.
The wingnut base doesn’t even realize that without net neutrality, their provider can lock out their favourite echo chambers any time, for example because some “liberal” company pays them big $$$ to do it. (And as for “then I’ll choose a conservative provider”, well, look at how “conservative Facebook” crashed and burned.)

I think Laity’s degree is some variety or other of pretend religious something or other, I vaguely remember hearing something to that effect when I first started reading about him. I just put it in the same basket with his pretend credentials as constitutional scholar and legal expert.
