I haven’t seen it, but there surely must somewhere be a political cartoon where Donald Trump is cast as the sailor in Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” with Obama’s birth certificate tied around his neck instead of an albatross.
Most recently Chris Matthews in an interview with Trump said of the candidates foray into birtherism:
I think it’s a blemish-I think it’s your original sin.
As for me, I think that any time someone says anything positive about Donald Trump, I’ll reply: “You can’t be serious. That man is a birther!”
Hmmm. I have an idea for another political cartoon, showing Trump in the stocks with a “Unrepentant Birther” sign around his neck.

The problem is that no media outlet is willing to take the ratings hit of alienating him. Even Matthews wouldn’t press him very hard on it. Next time he’s on one of the Sunday shows, they need to run a series of clips, saying “You claim you don’t want to talk about it, but here’s you talking about it, year after year. Do you stand by what you said, or not?”. And refuse to accept “I don’t want to talk about it now” as an answer.
It won’t really be an “albatross” in the metaphorical sense until somebody actually hangs it on him. Until then, it’s just a dead bird lying on the deck, out of sight and out of mind.
btw, BR produced a wonderful bit of unintended irony by uploading a clip of Trump dodging the question with Matthews, bracketed with their signature “The only people who don’t want to reveal the truth…” bumper video.
It took the American media, what, roughly four? years to expose McCarthy for the fraud he was (until Ed Murrow’s special, basically) so this does not come as a surprise.
I’ve often wondered what Donald Trump really was doing with the birth certificate adventure back in 2011.
Was Trump seriously trying to get anwers to his questions about Obama’s birth narrative? Or…
Was Trump actually acting in the role of a double agent, as Arpaio has suggested in recordings played in court in Arizona, and secretly working for Obama to short circuit Jerome Corsi’s book release about Obama’s birth certificate? Or…
Was it all simply just more marketing by Trump as a prelude to his eventual announcement that he would run for president?
I think Donald Trump should explain what his motivation was in 2011 and he should be answering the hard questions that he now wants to ignore.
That’s what the book “935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of America’s Moral Integrity” is all about.

I really, really wish someone would press him to explain what his investigators were finding in Hawaii that they couldn’t believe. Alas, I don’t think he’ll ever even be asked that question.
I’m pretty sure (but not positive) that he was asked that around the time of his candidacy announcement, and he dodged it with his “I don’t talk about that anymore” line. I think it was in one of the one-on-one interviews in the Trump Tower atrium (if anyone cares enough to research it).

If Anti Birthers really wanted to rest on the laurels, they could pay themselves on the back for Trump.
