The dog ate my server

It’s been a rough week or so technically here at Obama Conspiracy Theories. There’s been a lot of down time. Some of it was attributed to a distributed denial of service attack directed at my hosting company. Today is was due to a company-wide misconfiguration of the web servers. Some of the down time remains unexplained.

It’s a pain when I’m down. It eats up my time, and it lowers the site’s reputation for service.

Over the years, I’ve had personal or business accounts with a number of hosting companies, large and small. Sooner or later they all get to (or close to) the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of extended outages, bad customer service or changes in terms. I’ve been looking at alternatives.

Changing hosting companies can be like switching checkout lines at the market. Sometimes switching from something that looks bad to something that looks good turns out to be the wrong decision in the end.

Sigh.

  5. There was just a “major network outage” but it didn’t last too long.

    Consider Dreamhost.com.

I have several domains with them.
Low prices and good, quick service.

This is not to say there haven’t been problems, outages, hacking and other negative issues, but having been with more than a dozen hosts, they are the first one to last a full decade for me.

I think Dr. C said he is using Dreamhost.com. At least he said it was the case when I linked to the WHOIS database that says the domain name is registered to Dreamhost.com.
