Local taxpayers fed up with Arpaio investigation

imageSheriff Joe Arpaio has been letting birthers play “cops and President” at his office since birther enthusiast Jerome Corsi introduced the game at a local Tea Party gathering last year. Some local taxpayers, however, became outraged when they learned that $40,000 of Department funds had been used to send one of the birthers to play detective in Hawaii.

Carolyn Cooper of Citizens for a better Arizona appeared before the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to vent her frustration:

Sheriff Arpaio can no longer be trusted to act in the best interest of what’s best for citizens and residents in Maricopa County when it comes to public safety. This birther investigation is an embarrassment to many of us who call Arizona our home.

Thanks to CBS local affiliate KPHO for the story. AZCentral has further details on the expenses.

Question:

Is the Cold Case Posse resurrection of long-dead crackpot theories responsible for the upsurge in concern over zombies?

I think the upsurge in concern over zombies is because two things.

    1) That drugged out guy gnawed on the face of that homeless guy in Florida.

    2) Writers know that zombies are trendy right now, and they want those precious page clicks. They know that one way to get them is to trot out hackneyed jokes about zombies.

  2. Rickey says:

Perhaps our friend and Arpaio supporter John is a zombie? That would explain a lot.

I think part of that money is salary and benefits for that sheriff deputy that they sent along.

What Donald Trump’s Birther Investigators Will Find in Hawaii

you can do the trip in a single day: Leave DC first thing in the morning, obtain the documents, and you’ll still have time to sip a mai-tai on the beach before catching your flight home in the evening. He even went on Expedia and made me an itinerary: the whole trip would only cost $1228.40 (mai-tai not included).

And he wouldn’t have been paid if he hadn’t gone to HI? Probably they counted all his time as overtime. Nice work if you can get it.

Uh, it’s 2012. What do you expect? I hear people saying we won’t be here on December 23rd. Christmas has supposedly been cancelled. 😛

no word from Sheriff Joe on the Hawaii verification, specifically No Fraud!
can’t wait to see his press conference as the internet LFBC has been verified.

Zombies?!? Perhaps it’s because the GOP candidate for president qualifies.

  12. Bob says:

I’m sure Sheriff Joe’s expense report and an accountant’s statement will clear up any- and all- questions any hardworking taxpayer would have. Plus, there will be a lot of completely new evidence.

I think he’ll play zombie, to lull all of us to go with fiames or shotguns ….. only to find he’s a terminator in a zombie shell!!! Aiiiiiiiiieeeeee ….. *

I think the KPHO story is wrong. It is my recollection that the sheriff’s office said the Cold Case Posse had spent $40,000 on the investigation prior to the trip to Hawaii and that was from donated funds.

Of course it’s still reasonable to wonder what they did that cost that much money.

JPotter: Hanukkah! December 8-16th this year! (i think … IANJ )

Chanukah is 9-16th – 8 days. That oil lasting 8 days instead of 24 hours was no miracle. They got the oil wholesale from Shlomo and Sons.

Radio Shack based their slogan on Shlomo’s: You have shekels, we have the goods. Domino’s thinks they started delivery. Shlomo started it, with their fleet of camels.

CarlOrcas: It is my recollection that the sheriff’s office said the Cold Case Posse had spent $40,000 on the investigation prior to the trip to Hawaii and that was from donated funds.

No, Sheriff Joe said the $40K would be paid back from donations. No evidence of that, so far.

donna: He even went on Expedia and made me an itinerary: the whole trip would only cost $1228.40 (mai-tai not included).

Does it include the dollar bills put in the strippers’ garters?

i was thinking the same thing. arpaio said that 40k had been spent on the investigation but that it was all paid for by donations to the CCP. then when it was announced that an actual MCSO deputy was in hawaii arpaio vaguely said that sometimes money has to be spent on an investigation but he hopes that the CCP will pay back the expenses.

so, bottom line, it’s all on joe’s word. we really have no idea how much has been spent, what it’s been spent on and who is picking up the bill.

  26. CarlOrcas says:

misha: No, Sheriff Joe said the $40K would be paid back from donations. No evidence of that, so far.

Here’s a May 22nd story from the Republic that I think clarifies things:

“The cold-case posse has spent about $40,000 on the investigation so far, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The posse is funded through donations.

Arpaio has in the past touted the investigation’s total reliance on donated funds and volunteers, but he said the investigation now requires the use of a sworn deputy. Arpaio said the volunteer posse is in the midst of a criminal investigation but refused to discuss details of the probe or what drove the posse member and deputy to Hawaii.

The Sheriff’s Office also had to cover the costs of airfare and hotel rooms for the deputy, Arpaio said, but he expects the posse to reimburse the agency for those costs.”

Exactly. It’s going to be interesting to see if the supervisors push this any further.

  28. This article has been updated with a video of Arpaio discussing the expenses and a link to a report on it.

  29. Not a good idea. If they do that, Sheriff Joe will hold a press conference, accuse them of a crime (citing probable cause) and arrest them without a warrant. SOP.

Habits can be hard to break. And what does he have to lose? A career in WND ebooks as Corsi’s stooge? Arpaio’s pride will kick in, and he’ll go out in a blaze of ….. uh ….. not exactly glory ….

Arpaio can arrest anyone he wants but the County Attorney has to prosecute.

The last County Attorney that got involved with Arpaio is lookig at his old law license wondering what happened to him.

Assuming he doesn’t go to prison I suspect Arpaio will have a very lucrative post-Sheriff career giving speeches to the blue hair set.

Indefinite detention. He’ll accuse them of terrorism. Federal gov’t will have to invade to restore rulke of Constitution.

Well, OK, not, but it would make a great summer blockbuster. Literally!

According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the latest polls show that 46% of Arizonans approve of Arpaio and 45% disapprove. So it looks like it is your note which is lame-ass.
