Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been letting birthers play “cops and President” at his office since birther enthusiast Jerome Corsi introduced the game at a local Tea Party gathering last year. Some local taxpayers, however, became outraged when they learned that $40,000 of Department funds had been used to send one of the birthers to play detective in Hawaii.
Carolyn Cooper of Citizens for a better Arizona appeared before the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to vent her frustration:
Sheriff Arpaio can no longer be trusted to act in the best interest of what’s best for citizens and residents in Maricopa County when it comes to public safety. This birther investigation is an embarrassment to many of us who call Arizona our home.
Thanks to CBS local affiliate KPHO for the story. AZCentral has further details on the expenses.
Question:
Is the Cold Case Posse resurrection of long-dead crackpot theories responsible for the upsurge in concern over zombies?
I think the upsurge in concern over zombies is because two things.
1) That drugged out guy gnawed on the face of that homeless guy in Florida.
2) Writers know that zombies are trendy right now, and they want those precious page clicks. They know that one way to get them is to trot out hackneyed jokes about zombies.
Perhaps our friend and Arpaio supporter John is a zombie? That would explain a lot.
How do you spend 40 fracking grand on a Hawaiian vacation for two? They must have been ordering bottles of champagne to every table at the strip club.
I think part of that money is salary and benefits for that sheriff deputy that they sent along.
here’s what was written in the atlantic:
What Donald Trump’s Birther Investigators Will Find in Hawaii
you can do the trip in a single day: Leave DC first thing in the morning, obtain the documents, and you’ll still have time to sip a mai-tai on the beach before catching your flight home in the evening. He even went on Expedia and made me an itinerary: the whole trip would only cost $1228.40 (mai-tai not included).

And he wouldn’t have been paid if he hadn’t gone to HI? Probably they counted all his time as overtime. Nice work if you can get it.
You’re WRONG Thrifty! IT’S BECAUSE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US!!!
I have watched “Zombie Apocalypse” and I want to warn everyone to be on the watch for zombie tigers…..
“Is the Cold Case Posse resurrection of long-dead crank theories responsible for the upsurge in concern over zombies?”
Uh, it’s 2012. What do you expect? I hear people saying we won’t be here on December 23rd. Christmas has supposedly been cancelled. 😛
no word from Sheriff Joe on the Hawaii verification, specifically No Fraud!
can’t wait to see his press conference as the internet LFBC has been verified.
Zombies?!? Perhaps it’s because the GOP candidate for president qualifies.
I’m sure Sheriff Joe’s expense report and an accountant’s statement will clear up any- and all- questions any hardworking taxpayer would have. Plus, there will be a lot of completely new evidence.
How… when there wasn’t any old evidence?
For the year????
Don’t for the robot apocalypse. Easily confused. one goes crunch, the other goes squish. But this Romney fellow is quite good at keeping you guessing, isn’t he?
I think he’ll play zombie, to lull all of us to go with fiames or shotguns ….. only to find he’s a terminator in a zombie shell!!! Aiiiiiiiiieeeeee ….. *
I just hope he doesn’t sing when he comes for me. *cough*
Hanukkah!
December 8-16th this year! (i think … IANJ 🙁 )
I think the KPHO story is wrong. It is my recollection that the sheriff’s office said the Cold Case Posse had spent $40,000 on the investigation prior to the trip to Hawaii and that was from donated funds.
Of course it’s still reasonable to wonder what they did that cost that much money.
Riding with a posse had struck me as rough and dangerous work. Now I’m signing up!
Chanukah is 9-16th – 8 days. That oil lasting 8 days instead of 24 hours was no miracle. They got the oil wholesale from Shlomo and Sons.
Radio Shack based their slogan on Shlomo’s: You have shekels, we have the goods. Domino’s thinks they started delivery. Shlomo started it, with their fleet of camels.
How many birthers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None. They’re too busy examining birth certificates on the web.
How many people in Willard Romney’s household does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None. They’re too busy strapping Seamus to a car roof.
No, Sheriff Joe said the $40K would be paid back from donations. No evidence of that, so far.
Does it include the dollar bills put in the strippers’ garters?
Of course, but he would have (presumably) been doing something useful.
How many programmers does it take to screw in a light bulb.
None – Its a hardware problem.
ROTFLMAO!!! 😉

i was thinking the same thing. arpaio said that 40k had been spent on the investigation but that it was all paid for by donations to the CCP. then when it was announced that an actual MCSO deputy was in hawaii arpaio vaguely said that sometimes money has to be spent on an investigation but he hopes that the CCP will pay back the expenses.
so, bottom line, it’s all on joe’s word. we really have no idea how much has been spent, what it’s been spent on and who is picking up the bill.
Here’s a May 22nd story from the Republic that I think clarifies things:
“The cold-case posse has spent about $40,000 on the investigation so far, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The posse is funded through donations.
Arpaio has in the past touted the investigation’s total reliance on donated funds and volunteers, but he said the investigation now requires the use of a sworn deputy. Arpaio said the volunteer posse is in the midst of a criminal investigation but refused to discuss details of the probe or what drove the posse member and deputy to Hawaii.
The Sheriff’s Office also had to cover the costs of airfare and hotel rooms for the deputy, Arpaio said, but he expects the posse to reimburse the agency for those costs.”

Exactly. It’s going to be interesting to see if the supervisors push this any further.
This article has been updated with a video of Arpaio discussing the expenses and a link to a report on it.
Not a good idea. If they do that, Sheriff Joe will hold a press conference, accuse them of a crime (citing probable cause) and arrest them without a warrant. SOP.
Even Arpaio isn’t bold enough to try that again.
Habits can be hard to break. And what does he have to lose? A career in WND ebooks as Corsi’s stooge? Arpaio’s pride will kick in, and he’ll go out in a blaze of ….. uh ….. not exactly glory ….
Arpaio can arrest anyone he wants but the County Attorney has to prosecute.
The last County Attorney that got involved with Arpaio is lookig at his old law license wondering what happened to him.
Assuming he doesn’t go to prison I suspect Arpaio will have a very lucrative post-Sheriff career giving speeches to the blue hair set.
Cons have been watching The Walking Dead and think it’s a reality show.
Indefinite detention. He’ll accuse them of terrorism. Federal gov’t will have to invade to restore rulke of Constitution.
Well, OK, not, but it would make a great summer blockbuster. Literally!
His for the taking. Another character for the unrealityverse. If only he had pride to find.
Don’t forget the pink underwear!
Zombies? You people are f*cking whacked. The only zombies in 2012 are you Obots drinking the Obama kool-aid. And for the record, recent polls show the people in Arizona are not fed up with Arpajo. It’s just the opposite. This is a lame-ass article.
Mr. Potty Mouth,
What “recent polls”?
According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the latest polls show that 46% of Arizonans approve of Arpaio and 45% disapprove. So it looks like it is your note which is lame-ass.
