Sorry Doc, the open mike seems to be closed. This is an elaboration on the ‘its not a theory, dammit’ motif of the last few posts.

A current ‘theory’ making the rounds in Oz right now is the idea that eating nuts while breast feeding ‘may’ lead to peanut allergy.

“What we have uncovered is that from a biological point of view, there are risks for breastfeeding if women eat nuts during breastfeeding and probably during pregnancy,” he said.

“It is probably little fragments of nuts, proteins from nuts that mum had been eating. It is not the breast milk itself, it is the other very microscopic amounts of proteins and so on that you get from eating nuts.

“We are not saying that breast feeding should be stopped. What we are saying is that there is some risk at breast feeding if you’re eating, if mum is eating peanuts.”

Translation: “We don’t have any proof that there is any relationship what-so-ever”, but we have invented some anomalies in the stats between Oz and the UK and we aren’t sayin’, we’re just sayin’ “.

So, I guess they are suggestion that Paraguayan women stopped eating peanuts when they had kids, or there were massive peanut allergy deaths in pre-Columbian South America.

Peanut allergies are a bloody serious mother-diddling condition that was almost completely unknown until recently. Its just crazy. I have a much more reasonable HYPOTHESIS for the increased incidence of peanut allergy over the last few decades: over protective parents don’t let their kids be kids anymore. Eating dirt is part of being a kid and building up a robust immune system. Turning the home into an antiseptic operating theater doesn’t do anyone any good except the shareholders of the companies that sell the cleaning products. That’s my HYPOTHESIS anyway.

My money says there is Baby Formula Manufacturer money behind this ‘study’.

On a vaguely related note, the Australian “National Prescribing Service” (a Government funded foundation to promote the “Quality Use of Medicines”) is running a campaign to get people to challenge their doctor when they are prescribed antibiotics for virus infections. Antibiotics are rapidly losing their effectiveness in Australia because of over-prescription and folks are getting quite nervous about it. I see the US CDC is of a similar mind, and so to the UK DoH and the European Union.

I’ve been boring people with my HYPOTHESIS about this for 30 years and really ramped it up in Oz when I heard about friends routinely getting antibiotics from their doctor every time they had a little sniffle. Its true that some people are susceptible to bacterial infection when they have a virus; but when everyone is taking antibiotics they are just making them ineffective for those who actually need them.

I guess this particular HYPOTHESIS of mine has grown up to a full THEORY. Woop for me; sometimes I hate being right.

  2. JPotter says:

Keith: Turning the home into an antiseptic operating theater doesn’t do anyone any good except the shareholders of the companies that sell the cleaning products.

So then, i trust you live in a pig sty? 😉

    Your rant is spot on.

People get antibiotics for colds?!? That’s ridiculous. Drug abuse, even. Unprovoked pre-emptive strikes on friendly bacteria are bound to do more harm than good. Even justified aggression against malignant bacteria accomplishes a lot of collateral damage.

Back in the day before antibiotics, when people used silver instead (I wish I was making that up), at least the over-zealous were harming only themselves.

  4. If I recall correctly, it was the Wall Street Journal that initially published this story. Generally economic policy is off topic for this blog, but there is clearly a connection between telling lies and believing lies about Barack Obama, whether it is about his place of birth, or how much the federal government spends during his administration.

Politics in the US has been for the last 3 decades more or less dysfunctional. I thought that electing a dedicated pragmatist president would help, but it didn’t. Checks and balances are great, but gridlock is not.

Sadly, there is a lot of that that has been happening over the past 2 decades. It seemed they would try to prescribe antibiotics for everything under the sun! I’d say the abuses were more common and worse probably 10 years ago than now. Finally, some doctors have stopped pandering to the hypochondriacs (and drug companies) and have become a lot more conscious about drug-resistant strains developing and a lot more careful in what and when they prescribe such solutions…

I’ve actually always been the opposite. When doctors used to over-casually try to prescribe antibiotics for me or my wife on severe cold/flu type illnesses, I’d grill them pretty hard to convince me that such medicines were actually necessary / appropriate.

This bothers me. If he’s gonna have another press conference where he gives ZERO proof of fraud and instead just highlights “anomalies” and shows how fraud COULD be committed (e.g., stamps can be cut with an exacto knife), someone needs to be there to call him out on it in person… or at the very least question him about why he still has no proof and how long he plans to continue an investigation that hasn’t found any proof. I don’t know that there are any members of the media that are knowledgable enough about this nonsense to be equipped to ask the right questions though.

Roberts instructed the White House to decide by August 13 whether to take another shot at convincing the court that the suit was without merit or allow Klayman to take depositions and seek records related to the meetings. In his earlier incarnation, Klayman became the legal scourge of the Clinton Administration by forcing senior officials into lengthy depositions and subjecting them to wide-ranging questions.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s two-ring circus comes to town

The Ringling Brothers just left Phoenix, but don’t worry, boys and girls: Another circus is coming to town this week, and it’s shaping up to be a real two-ring doozie. In one ring we have a tea party ass-kissing media hog; in the other you’ll find a, well, criminal. Psst! They’re the same guy.

First up, on Tuesday, July 17, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his sidekick jokers at WorldNetDaily have scheduled a second press conference that promises to reveal even more explosive evidence about the president’s “forged” birth certificate.

Right on cue, the Globe reported on Arpaio’s earth-shattering investigation. In addition to revealing “Dirty secrets of the NBA champs,” the fish-wrapper’s front page screams, “BUSTED! This man forged Obama birth certificate.” There’s even a photo of the president having a sad and a man hiding his identity, so it must be so. Oh, and Kathie Lee hates Regis. And check out the words beneath the president: “Breaking News: Bloodbath!” Classy.

Donald Trump responded to question about Mitt Romney’s taxes by raising the issue of President Obama’s college transcripts, saying that Mitt Romney should release more of his tax returns when President Obama releases his college “applications and records,” in an interview on “Fox & Friends” Monday morning. Trump said that Romney releasing two years of returns was enough and that he understands not wanting to release more because the Democrats use the information they find to make him look bad.

Trump hit the issue of Obama’s college transcripts several times in the interview – which he has done repeatedly in the past as well. Trump said that if he were running for president, he would promise to release any amount of tax returns in exchange for Obama’s grades.

They raised their glasses as the peloton rode by, and I’m guessing it was over in less than a minute. I guess this is a tradition in the countryside, although I realize that the routes change every year and there’s no guarantee that your location is going to be on the routes the next year.

I certainly have a lot of respect for the riders, although some Europeans I’ve worked with are cynical that everyone is doped. I remember riding once trying to get to a top speed, and I managed maybe 37 MPH on flat land, but only after drafting off of a group and bursting ahead for the peak speed. I remember Greg Lemond managed to average that for his legendary 1989 time trial finish where he wasn’t even being drafted.

    (Re Tour de France topicette)

y_p_w: I certainly have a lot of respect for the riders, although some Europeans I’ve worked with are cynical that everyone is doped.

That was certainly a reasonable assumption twenty years ago (perhaps not everyone, but many or most), and about ten years ago there was great cause for skepticism. David Millar tried to race clean then got seduced into doping by peer pressure (of the “you’re crazy if you don’t dope” sort) as much as anything, got caught and punished and is now a strident anti-doper, and his autobiography is an interesting read on the subject as we don’t often get an honest view from the inside.

But many of the current crop of riders come from a clean racing background, especially the British ones who are an offshoot of the awesome British track team which came to the fore about 8 years ago, and which was ruthlessly clean. They get many of the effects of doping – which often is to allow harder training or quicker recovery – by better carefully targeted training.

Bradley Wiggins, the current yellow jersey (leader of the Tour) has an interesting article in a very recent edition of The Guardian newspaper entitled Bradley Wiggins: I can never dope because it would cost me everything where he lists how his life would suffer if he were to be caught doping, his reputation, finances, medals, all sorts of things would suffer. Added to that disincentive to doping is also the fact that the anti-doping tests are getting better and better, so it becomes increasingly difficult to get away with it. Lance Armstrong is currently finding life a little hot as his old blood samples are re-tested, especially as I think the French cycling authorities resent him.

    Link to Wiggins article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2012/jul/13/bradley-wiggins-dope-drugs

There’s also a cultural thing: the northern Europeans tend to very disapproving of doping whereas the southern Europeans tend to be more ambivalent: when Richard Virenque (a great French “grimpeur”) got caught, the French public didn’t reject him in the same way as, say, the British public would. G: Thanks for sharing that! It was sad to see many small shop areas closed or not in use (like that interesting market exchange area). Then again, the same has happened in many small towns everywhere here in America…so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it would be that way in many other parts of the world as well. Some of this is just a result of modernization and the trend towards chain stores over mom & pop shops. Some, I’m sure is also a result of global economic slowdown.

In the 60s and 70s (berfore we moved there) there was actual industry — rubber and clothing factories — in the area, but they all closed the; the local population dwindled from 5000 to about 1000/1200 where it is today. However we still have 2 groceries, 2 butcher shops, 2 cafés, 1 bank, 2 insurance agents, 2 doctors, 1 pharmacy, 1 gas station, 1 newsagent, 2 bakeries, 1 hotel/restaurant, so it’s not as bad (by far) as many other villages which have little or no services.

  63. Lupin says:

Sam the Centipede: That was certainly a reasonable assumption twenty years ago (perhaps not everyone, but many or most), and about ten years ago there was great cause for skepticism.

I’m inclined to agree with this.

Armstrong was/is widely unpopular amongst many people (nor just the French; in America too) unlike Greg LeMond who was generally loved by one and all. I have a friend who met both of them in a professional capacity and he thought Armstrong was a dick.

G: It was sad to see many small shop areas closed or not in use

The guys color commentators for Australian TV (I think its the same ones for the US coverage, but I could be wrong) mentioned that a listener had texted or tweeted a question about the empty villages, spectators yes, but no visible shop and general population are noticeable from helicopter shots, and often even the street level shots don’t show open shops. The commentators said that they too had noticed that over the years, the small villages all seemed to be closed up when the race went through and they didn’t have an explanation.

My guess is that the Tour is a real circus for locals, and once the tourists have trampled over all the rose bushes, crapped in the wheat fields, and painted grafitti all over the streets, the locals have pretty much glad it only happens once every few years for them.

Lupin: They announce the exact itinerary months in advance, so you can plan to “follow” the Tour if you’re so inclined. You should see how many British, German, Dutch, Belgian, etc. camping cars travel with the Tour every year.

Yeah, TdF tours are big business in Australia too. My wife best friends brother has gone 3 times, and is pissed off that he had to miss it this year. They set up packages with ex-riders, like Australian Phil Anderson, and they often ride various stages of the tour route a few days before or after the race goes through.

  66. Keith says:

I just had an ‘interesting’ exchange with a ‘correspondent’ on another site.

He was commenting on an article at Newsbusters.org by someone called Lamar Smith. I’ve never heard of Smith, but the blog masthead claims it is “exposing and combating liberal media bias”. (perhaps someone here is familiar with him?) [Edit: is this the Texas Congressman?]

The thrust of my correspondents comment was that the mainstream media is in cahoots with the politicians of both sides of the fence, picking and choosing what they report (no kidding?).

But then, as an example, he highlighted Smith’s observation that when the recent employment figures came out showing job growth but not very good growth, Obama said “see, the private sector is doing fine, but the public sector down”, the media reported it positively, but nobody asked the long term unemployed whether they thought the economy was doing fine. Furthermore, when the Fed released figures showing that household net worth was down 40% from 2005 to 2010 nobody mentioned it at all, let alone asked how that showed the economy was doing fine.

The point my correspondent was trying to make was that you really need to have a jaundiced eye when reading the mainstream media.

I guess I had a bit of a field day with that one.

First I pointed out that Obama didn’t say the economy was doing fine, only that the private sector was apparently doing fine and hiring lots of people compared to the public sector. He was commenting on the reason for the slow over all growth, not on the satisfactory nature of the situation.

Second I pointed out that net worth statistics over a five year period don’t have anything to do with short term employment figures, 2005 was the height of the property price bubble and 2010 was just about the bottom of it. Why should there be a surprise that household net worth had declined.

And here is the (vague, I admit) tie in to the topic here. He clearly hadn’t done any fact checking and just relied on Smith’s blog entry that the stats actually showed a 40% decline 2005 – 2010. Just like a birther/conspiracy theorist. Believe any bull crap however obviously doubtful it is, as long as it seems to support your particular paranoic hallucination.

I looked up the stats and found them here: Balance Sheet of Households and Nonprofit Organizations

So, what that chart actually shows is that yes, net worth declined 2005-2010 – around 2.5% though, not 40%. Is it any wonder why the MSM didn’t pick up on that story? It is total crappola. A 1600% lie.

Also the 2012Q1 figures are available, that is why the chart was published at that time. Why weren’t the latest figures used? Because they show a 2.5% growth since 2005 that’s why.

Sen. Sherrod Brown’s Wife Makes Conservative Blogger Look Silly

Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer prize-winning columnist and wife of Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, posted an E-mail exchange between herself and an unnamed, unwitting conservative blogger to her Facebook page Tuesday night.

The blogger emailed Schultz on July 9 to say, smugly:

The man leaps towards the bell, hits it with his head, and it rings. “Oui, mais” Quasimodo says, “can you do this for several hours?” “Mais bien sur,” the man replies. He leaps several times more, and then misses the bell, sails through the opening, and falls to the street.

Quasimodo makes his way down the stairs, walks up to where the gendarmeries are standing, and looks at the man’s crumpled body. “Mon Dieu,” he says. He is asked by them, “Do you know this man?”

OBAMA’S KENYAN BIRTH RECORDS DISCOVERED IN BRITISH NATIONAL ARCHIVES

In the absence of honor, courage and justice on the part of those serving in the U.S. Congress and Federal Judiciary, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Cold Case investigative group has concluded the only law enforcement analysis of the image of Obama’s alleged “Certificate of Live Birth” posted to a government website in April, 2011 and found it to be the product of criminal fraud and document forgery.

It now appears the worst fears of the U.S. Constitution’s framers were well founded as investigators working on behalf of the ongoing investigation into the Constitutional eligibility of Barack Obama have found yet another lead in a growing mountain of evidence within the public records section of the British National Archives indicating the occurrence of at least four vital events registered to the name of Barack Obama, taking place in the British Protectorate of East Africa (Kenya) between 1953 and 1963, including the birth of two sons before 1963.

Although the passing of a friend is always a sad occasion, I found that there was a lot more of Birther-related intrigue to your article than the title proffers.

I will encourage everyone here to check it out, as it tells quite the cloak-and-dagger paranoia tale of much of the physical custody of your POSFKBC over the past few years. I had always assumed it simply remained in your possession or Steadman ended up bidding it off your eBay or something like that.

My eyebrows were certainly raised to find out that Mario Apuzzo is your attorney…and that he held onto the POSFKBC for you from 12/8/10 – 9/15/11… (from your attached 11-22-11 letter to Phyllis, page 2, 3rd paragraph)

…Although from your description, it sounds like there was some problems with the professional service you received from Mr. Apuzzo, as you allude that he ignored your emails and calls to return the POSFKBC to you for months and then finally delivered it, again with no explanation.

So I am curious about that relationship between you and Mario Apuzzo. Is he still your Attorney? In what capacity does/did he represent you? Was he involved with any of your recent court issues?

From the description in the letter, it sure sounds that the professional relationship was strained…or at least not up to any minimum responsive standards of what I would expect as a client from an attorney representing me.

New post on Orly’s site states something that one of our new birther guests has been spouting recently.

Results of the poll conducted by Komarovski show:89.6% believe that Obama was not born in the US and not eligible, 10.4% believe that he was born in the US and eligible

Komarovski seems to refer to Leonid Komarovski which…. well a quick glance at the first page of Google reveals several more mentions by Orly Taitz of her appearing on his show, but no reference to his actual show or where you can listen to it. I’m thinking this Leonid Komarovski is just some random goober.

One time, when I was in the 10th grad, I knew this kid named Kyle in my Biology class. He was a big time Madonna fan, and talked about Madonna a lot. One day, I told Kyle “You’re obsessed with Madonna.” He said “No I’m not.”. I told him I would poll the class and see what they thought. So I went to everyone in our class of 15 students and asked them “Do you think Kyle is obsessed with Madonna?” Everybody responded “yes”.

It was a small group of people. They all knew Kyle (who was a rather ostentatious character), and they knew his propensity to talk about Madonna a lot. Many of them smiled from amusement when I asked my question. So I get the feeling my sample wasn’t exactly random and unbiased. It was also pretty small.

This report of the Komarovski poll reminds me of that.

Can anyone else find anything on this Leonid Komarovski guy? Google isn’t turning up anything more than a bunch of references by Orly Taitz, plus the usual junk you usually get when you Google a non-famous name.

there is no mention of Zullo in the New Jersey public employees pension system, so if he did retire as a police officer, he didn’t do so in the traditional manner. Assuming, of course, that he was a police officer in the first place.

A 1998 Bergen Record article also describes him as a “former private investigator” living in the Phoenix, Az. area.

Zullo does not self-identify now as an active private investigator. In fact, a check of Arizona private investigator licenses shows only that someone named Gary Zullo had a PI license in the state, but that expired nearly eight years ago.

Now, Arizona law says that to legally work as a PI, or do any “investigative” work, you have to have a license. And here’s how the Arizona Revised Statutes defines “private investigator:

    Ask John Sununu:

“I Wish This President Would Learn How To Be An American.”

  168. donna says:

Majority Will: Ask John Sununu: “I Wish This President Would Learn How To Be An American.”

and HIS background (i stole from another poster)?

Sununu was born in Havana, Cuba, the son of Victoria (née Dada) and John Saleh Sununu, an international film distributor.

He is of Palestinian Christian and Greek descent.

His father grew up in Jerusalem and his mother was born in San Salvador, El Salvador.

His tenure as Chief of Staff was marked by an intense interest in traveling to ski lodges and golf resorts on the taxpayer’s dime while promoting the “Thousand Points of Light” program to stop people from frittering away the government’s money on things like basic survival.

donna: His tenure as Chief of Staff was marked by an intense interest in traveling to ski lodges and golf resorts on the taxpayer’s dime while promoting the “Thousand Points of Light” program to stop people from frittering away the government’s money on things like basic survival.

As White House Chief of Staff, Sununu reportedly took personal trips, for skiing and other purposes, and classified them as official, for purposes such as conservation or promoting the Thousand Points of Light. The Washington Post wrote that Sununu’s jets “took him to fat-cat Republican fund-raisers, ski lodges, golf resorts and even his dentist in Boston.” Sununu had paid the government only $892 for his more than $615,000 worth of military jet travel. Sununu said that his use of the jets was necessary because he had to be near a telephone at all times for reasons of national security. Sununu became the subject of much late-night television humor over the incident. Sununu worsened the situation shortly afterwards when, after leaking rumors of financial difficulties in his family, he traveled to a rare stamp auction at Christie’s auction house in New York City from Washington in a government limousine, spending $5,000 on rare stamps. Sununu then sent the car and driver back to Washington unoccupied while he returned on a corporate jet.

Sununu repaid over $47,000 to the government for the flights on the orders of White House counsel C. Boyden Gray, with the help of the Republican Party. However, the reimbursements were at commercial rates, which are about one-tenth the cost of the actual flights; one ski trip to Vail, Colorado alone had cost taxpayers $86,330.

$25,000 Challenge to General Colin Powell
    Article II Super PAC

On August 8, 2011 the Birther Summit issued a challenge to Gen. Colin Powell (Ret) to review a mountain of evidence clearly demonstrating the birth certificate officially released by the White House and posted on its server on April 27, 2011 was a forgery.

Nine days later, the Arizona “Surprise Tea Party” collected 242 signatures on a petition requesting Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona to conduct an investigation into the birth certificate posted on the White House servers on April 27, 2011.

One man honored his Oath of Office by immediately launching an investigation, while the other dismissed “We the People’s” challenge in classic Alinsky style — ridicule.

Article II Super PAC revisited the original challenge and upped the ante. We are giving General Colin Powell a second chance to do what an honorable man does–honor his Oath. We are challenging him “to meet with Sheriff Arpaio in the reasonably near future, review the evidence, and issue a statement regarding that evidence. If you choose to accept this challenge, which we pray you will do, then we will make a $25,000 donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in your name.”

Duty, honor and country–does it still matter? Will Gen. Colin Powell accept Article II Super PAC’s Challenge?

So, when Sunununununu opines Obama should learn to act like a “Real American”, he means he can’t trust a man who doesn’t embezzle?

LMAO! Good for him! May all of these lying scammers have their day of being of being hoisted on their own petard and skewered by their own remarks.

    Andrew Vrba, PmG:
This is unrelated but damn funny. I get a news feed on my Wii, and some of the stories this week have covered Sheriff Joe’s trial. One of the stories was about how he, despite being very vocal and showy, became suddenly very quiet in court after some of his own BS was played back to him. He claims that he’s fighting the flu. Yeah, right. he also claimed that him calling hispanics, “dirty” was taken out of context, and that he didn’t REALLY mean that he was “honored” to have his department compared to the Klan.

Stick a fork in him, he his done! But be sure to put him in the garbage, as that ham is well past it’s prime.

Orly has filed a motion for mandamus/prohibition/quo warranto arguing that President Obama’s name on the ballot is in violation of Indiana Law.

I show why she will fail

First of all, President Obama’s name is correctly represented on the ballot, Orly just failed to read further. Second of all, a mandamus cannot be used in an instance where Orly already had the statutory opportunity to object, and finally, Orly has no direct interest in the office and thus cannot use Quo Warranto (assuming that there is even a public office of ‘nominee for the President’).

So many problems… Did I miss my calling and should I have entered law school? 🙂

All joking aside, anyone with a computer and an internet connection could have found what I found in a few hours of effort.

MSNBC: What Now? The corrupt Cold Case Posse

welcome back. time for “what now.” cold case posse lead investigator mike zulo admits that he violated the maricopa county sheriff’s office code of conduct for accepting $ 1400 for the sale of the ebook version of his investigation into president obama’s birth certificate. meanwhile, arizona sheriff joe arpaio is taking the stand today over allegations of racial profiling and targeting latinos. hugo, does it surprise anybody on earth that the cold case posse may not be the crackerjack investigative team that sheriff joe thought they might be?

i’m not surprised. these are fun, crazy people out there having a fun, crazy time.

the sheriff did a good job of helping this issue jump the shark. it is in the realm of
    the absurd, is it not?

…… how do we know that someone didn’t go to every library in hawaii and change the microfiche?

been there for a long time. conspiracy theories have long lives in america. think about the zapruder film. obviously that involved the assassination of a president but 30 years later, oliver stone made a movie about that for people who are fevered in their minds and paranoid and lunatics, this won’t stop this year or next year. it will go on — barack obama will leave office and people will still be saying this was true 20 years from now.
