Jason Thompson apologizes
Some gaffes fade, but some become a candidate’s albatross. Mitt Romney’s father George’s infamous comment about being “brainwashed” after a visit to Vietnam is cited as the beginning of the downfall of his presidential hopes. Mitt Romney’s 47% comment looked like his undoing until he evened the score with a superior debate performance.
It’s much easier for surrogates to get away with saying things that a candidate cannot. We remember one of Mitt Romney’s sons making a birther joke that caused a stir and now Jason Thompson, son of Senate Candidate Tommy Thompson is backpedaling after being caught in video at a Sunday brunch saying , “We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago — or Kenya.”
This is the time in history when most folks carry a movie camera around with them in their mobile telephone, and a joke that works in one context can be inserted into another where it doesn’t work at all. In this case Jason Thompson was repudiated by his father’s campaign, reports the Chicago Sun-Times:
“The Governor has addressed this with his [38-year-old] son, just like any father would do,” the campaign said in a statement. “Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes.”
Even Republican National Chairman Reince Preibus addressed the issue saying, “The comment was out of line and his son rightfully apologized.” How humiliating! I guess birtherism is not welcome in the Republican Party—officially.

It has occurred to me that it would be interesting if, at the town hall debate tomorrow, Romney were asked this:
“Governor Romney, you surely are aware of the fact that some of your strongest supporters, including Donald Trump, have been questioning whether President Obama is a natural-born citizen of the United States. Are you willing to state without equivocation that President Obama is a natural-born citizen and that he unquestionably is qualified to serve as President of the United States?”

however, there is a feud between the parties and the commission about whether crowley will be allowed to ask follow-ups

Somebody needs to tell the Franklin County GOP about the birtherism policy then…one of their yard signs at a craft fair I attended on Saturday said “Let’s vote for the real American”. I was tempted to ask them whether they were implying that Gary Johnson is not a real American, but I was working our fused glass business stall at the time, so I had to take care of that first, and they packed up and left early. However, here in Texas, birtherism and anti-gay sentiment seem to be big “hot button” issues.
