In a telephonic town hall meeting earlier this evening, Senator Lindsey Graham pointed out a gaping loophole in the federal background check system (NICS): state participation in submitting mentally ill persons to the NICS database is spotty at best, allowing persons legally unable to own guns to evade background checks.
In 2008, Senator Graham at another meeting identified persons who think Barack Obama was a Muslim or born outside the United States were “crazy.”
It seems to me that the Senator is calling for the birthers to be entered into the NICS database and forced to buy their guns from private sellers online and from unlicensed sellers at gun shows (Graham opposes universal background checks).
Senator Graham spoke of some sort of adjudication before a mentally dangerous person was placed in the federal system, but I assume that if he introduces legislation, being a birther would be one of the tests for being dangerous.
Is it Aprils Fools day again?
I had a (former) birther friend say she wouldn’t assassinate, but she’d buy the bullets!! They ARE dangerous.
“There are, and probably will continue to be, fewer and fewer people who will live their lives in relatively good mental health according to the DSM.”

Mental Illness, Gun Rights, And Medical Privacy
Tresmond says his client was ordered to turn in his weapons last week because he was once on anti-anxiety medication, which is a violation of the SAFE Act. Wednesday, State Police informed the Erie County Clerk’s Office that it made a mistake when it said Lewis was in violation of the state’s new gun law.
But Tresmond says it was no mistake.
“When they targeted David, they not only targeted him by name, they also targeted him by his pistol permit, so they identified him as David Lewis with this particular pistol permit number on the letter that they sent to him,” said Tresmond.

HIPAA protects the birth certificate but not much else…

The Outside the Beltway story is off the mark.
It WAS a mistake. The State Police identified the wrong David Lewis. The correct David Lewis does indeed have “severe mental health issues.” And HIPAA has nothing to do with it.

It would be extremely difficult to determine who is crazy and who is not.
As per the recommendation of one of the commenters here, I’ve been watching the Yale Early Middle Ages free on line course. The decline of the Roman Empire gets crazier and crazier, and there appear to be many similarities to the decline of America today. Here’s a brief summary:
Some of the most unstable periods of Roman history existed during the sedition of the army against the Senate when the government existed solely to defend the wealth of the rich from the ravages of the poor, and/or barbarian invasion. The army took it upon itself to make or break Emperors, murdering most of them after they brought them to power.
While Greek history concerned itself more with philosophy and ultimately a secular religion, politics was the concern of the Roman empire until Emperor Constantine converted and declared Christianity as the official religion. In some sense Constantine might be viewed as the “first Pope” since the Christian church did not have an empowered figurehead until then.
Constantine wrote letters to the Persians (considered barbarians and mysterious “outsiders”) on behalf of Christians. He wrote an edict on religious tolerance and he made Sunday a civic holiday that freed soldiers for religious observation (an unlikely scenario given that Christ is a pacifist, according to the online Professor). Christianity is essentially opposed to using violence as a means to gain worldly wealth.
Prior to Constantine, Diocletian had persecuted the Christians severely, as had Nero (most people are familiar with the legend that Nero played the harp while Rome burned, which he blamed on Christians).
As a world leader, Constantine appears to have made a major compromise on the world theater, as did the military in compromising with pacifist beliefs. Within a hundred years or so the Roman Empire fell.
We can see many parallels between the Roman Empire and what could be a sedition, or a decline of America but the craziness does not end there. To many Americans, “Persia” (modern Iran) remains a mystery. They are still considered “outsiders” and America fears a barbarian invasion.
Just today I listened to a radio show where John McAfee (of the McAfee Anti-Virus) was a guest and he stated that while he was a “fugitive from justice” in Central America/Guatemala, he learned that Hezbollah (from Lebanon, Saudi America, etc.) was joining with drug cartels and entering into the U.S. from Mexico (which justifies Arpaio on more than one level now!) McAfee also claims that this conspiracy is responsible for mailing the Ricin-poisoned (made from castor beans) letters to Obama and others. The plan is to spray Ricin in the populace as a form of chemical warfare. Ricin claims he has NOT turned this information over to the Department of Justice.
Sarah Obama to George Hussein Obama
Sarah “so you want to know why Hussein?”
George “Yeah”
Sarah “You were called Hussein because your dad was a Muslim and his father before that”
“The religion of your birth is Islam because that is the religion on your father’s side of the family”
“You know, you’re a third-generation Muslim in our eyes”
“you were brought up a Christian, but by birth and by rights you’re a Muslim”
George “This is the first time anyone told me that I was born a Muslim”
Barack Hussein Obama

Not that it will matter to someone like you, but
“…no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” Article VI Section III, Constitution of the United States

Thanks, gorefan, I was not aware of the religious test clause, and it is for good cause that we have it. Declarations of religion by public officials seem to serve the purpose of not alienating religious voters but I am highly suspicious of the people who require these public confessions, and the officials who make them.
Apparently neither was e. vattel, maybe because he is Swiss.
They’ve made an arrest in that case, and it has nothing to do with Hezbollah or Mexico or Drugs.
McAfee has issues. It could be wise to take his ‘pronouncements’ with a grain of salt.
And the bipolar Elvis impersonator from Mississippi sounds a lot like some of the paranoid, delusional birther bigots.
Well several birthers say he’s a democrat and then I point to pictures of him at prolife rallies where he was a rabid activist. There’s a paper trail of him ranting about random conspiracy theories.
“Under the new gun-control law, mental health professionals are mandated to report to the local county commissioner of mental health if they believe an individual they are treating has the potential to harm themselves or others.” (more in depth story here)

Where is due process here? There has to be a mechanism to stop severely mentally ill people from having access to guns, but there has to be a better way. Because due process is not in place here, this kind of costly mistake occurred and will happen again. Because the poor guy was mistaken for someone else, his privacy has been violated. Not only is there potential for mistaken identity, but also for an over-zealous mental health official to make a decision that may not even be valid.
Dr Kenneth Noisewater
do you have a link for the photos of Paul Kevin Curtis at pro-life rallies?
TIA
When I was digging around for him I came across an old myspace page I think meant to promote his Elvis Impersonation. I actually found it based on the photo someone posted of him standing next to a car with a democrat bumper sticker

You have to dig around his pictures a bit I think he had some on his facebook page as well
Poor little Birthers they are haters not debaters. In my opinion this is what the small portions of the republican party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” have brought you. They are good at “Follow the Leader” of their dullard leaders, they listen to Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush and Savage (don’t you get tired being lied to) and the rest of the Blowhards. Are you surprise at what they do when you know what they think? The world is complicated and most republicans (Hamiliton, Lincoln, Roosevelt) believe that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now its about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. Although some republicans are trying to distant themselves from this fringe most of them are just going along and fanning the flames. Lets face it the Republicans had 8 years to deal with health care, immigration and financial oversight and governance and they failed. They could not even win one of the two wars they started, the body bags are still coming in. The Republicans wanted to give Obama his Waterloo defeat over healthcare and this last presidential election but instead they gave themselves their own Waterloo defeat by not participating in the debate of ideas and by becoming little, as the party of obstructionist. But they now claim they have changed, come on, what sucker is going to believe that Rubio, Paul, Cruz and Ryan are anything but losers? But maybe thats all you have.
