    Recycled birther meme.

    On his blogtalk show yesterday MIke Volin brought up the 2007 Selma, Alabama speech by then-Senator Obama.

    He is convinced that it is an admission that the President was born in Selma after 1965. What a moron.

    There is also an update by Carl Gallups – basically nothing knew but they have not been able to get together with Congressman Stockman again and Gallups mentions several times that Stockman could drop out and that maybe nothing will happen before the President leaves office in 2017.

    As I understand it, the State of Hawaii issued a paper document to the President. That paper document was his Birth Certificate. It is prima facie evidence of the information on it. The State of Hawaii has confirmed that they issued such a document, that it was based upon the information they held, and that the information on the scan is the same as the information on the document they issued.

    So what is the significance of a purported copy/scan of that document? It is not an official anything. No court would consider it as evidence. If someone thinks that copy/scan has problems, so what?

    Let’s assume that the document was retyped, cut and pasted, or whatever is being purported. So what? The underlying document has been vouched for by the State. Example, let’s say I apply for a job and need to prove that I am licensed to drive. I send a scan of my license to them. They question it and we ask the state – did you issue this guy a drivers’ license, is the information on the scan match the information you have on your copy of the license, and is the picture the same? And the state says yes to all this. The name matches, the address matches, the physical description matches (OK, the weight may be a little off but it’s the same as the state thinks), the picture matches, and there is a valid license that has been issued. Again, what’s the issue?

    I’m sorry Stephen, but your comment proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are nowhere near stupid enough to be a birther. You’ll never understand birther reasoning by taking an approach based on facts, logic, and the law.

    Here’s my take on how someone arrives at the conclusion that the pdf image of the LFBC is in any way significant:

    First, one has to fancy themselves a scientist while completely failing to understand how the scientific process works. In other words, to use a phrase coined by Richard Feynman, to engage in cargo cult science (aping the superficial trappings while being completely ignorant of the foundation on which they are based).

    Instead of asking a scientific (i.e. falsifiable) question and employing a sound investigatory methodology to develop evidence to support or refute that question, you first need to determine the conclusion that you wish to reach (something like “the pdf posted to the White House website is a forgery” or “President* Obama was not born in Hawai’i”). A logical consequence of your conclusion should be that the LFBC pdf is a forgery—you are now ready to collect “evidence” to “prove” this to be the case, a process that is easy provided that you avoid any shred of objectivity.

    The next step is to open up the pdf in a viewer which enables you to view the construction of the document (layers, metadata, etc.) and repeat the following process until you are satisfied that your “evidence” is “irrefudiatable”:

    1. Identify an aspect of the construction which you cannot explain (WARNING: any knowledge of image compression or pdf construction techniques will severely handicap you at this point).

    2. ??????

    3, Classify the artifact as an anomaly which could only be the result of human intervention.

    The beauty of this technique is that, having no discernable methodology, your methodology cannot be attacked.

    If you truly wish to understand birther reasoning, however, you will most likely need to take proactive steps to adjust your intelligence level in order to be successful. A serious meth habit, hardcore huffing, and traumatic brain injury would all give you a good start in this quest.

    * Using the title of president when referring to Mr. Obama is a dead giveaway that you are an evil socio-commie liberal obot of course—be sure to avoid rookie mistakes like this.

    If it’s not a scan of an original document, then the President lied about what was released to the public. If he lied about this, then he must be covering up something, which is obviously that he doesn’t have a real Hawaiian birth certificate to scan.

    1) The PDF file does not show indications that a human assembled it from pieces of other certificates, but rather shows that it was scanned from an original document by an office machine like the Xerox WorkCentre 7655 and then rotated with Mac Preview.

    2) The fact that Obama has an authentic Hawaiian birth certificate has been verified, independent of what the White House released.

    If you are expecting to find any sense in the birther conclusions, or any coherent alternative narrative explaining the evidence regarding Obama’s birth place, you are wasting your time. The birther theory is not logically coherent–it does not make sense.

    I can’t post/reply there, but I have to say that the quoted book excerpt which claims that Madison et al would have had to appear before a French Court and swear allegiance in order to become “real” French citizens is extremely debatable (to say the least).

    Once Honorary Citizenship was granted by the Assembly, if accepted (and certainly Madison did accept it), nothing more was required.

    Same with US Homorary Citizenship granted by an Act of Congress, in fact.

    There is room to debate what exactly that Honorary Citizen entailed in terms of rights, privileges & obligations, but the person on free republic who denies it altogether or the author of the book he quotes is wrong.

    Poe’s Law. It applies to the crazies as well, that is why several known deliberate hoaxes (such as the “foreign student application” April Fool’s joke) have made it into birther canon (or the “hundreds of thousands of military votes not counted in 2012 election” into Tea Party lore).

Author claims a consular certificate was issued for the child but then shows no documentation of who the child supposedly was. The images on the page are too small to even read.     Only, don’t, unless you want to spend your time hanging around with a bunch of Texans (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). Having spent a couple years living in Belize back in the late 80’s, I do recommend it, but IMHO it’s better as an adventure destination. Instead of sipping fancy rum drinks on Ambergris, check out the inland. If you’re a birder, you’ll love the bird sanctuary; the lagoons and creeks there are just teeming with flocks of exotic birds that congregate during the dry season, as well as howler monkeys, crocs, and jaguars. For the Indiana Jones wannabe, there are virtually untouched (read: unlooted) Maya sites to explore – at least there were when I was there. You can still have your rum drink, but it’ll likely be served in a green coconut, cut open with a machete, with the rum poured right into the coconut water. No little umbrella necessary.

    Unfortunately, I think they do have internet access there now. 🙁

    In such cases, in order to “PROVE” the information contained in the state certified birth document is correct, the information from the natal hospital must also be provided.

    Actually, such records are sealed and it would take an order from a court (who was bound by the “Full Faith and Credit” clause to accept a certified copy of a birth certificate at face value) to get them. However, in President Obama’s case this isn’t a problem since Kapi’olani Hospital was kind enough to publish a letter from the president which refers to that hospital as his place of birth.

    Unfortunately, to date, such information has not been forthcoming from Mr. Obama, and, thus, his presidential qualifications have not been “Proven” to have been met**.

    There is sufficient evidence that every single court in the United States is Constitutionally obligated to accept the facts of President Obama’s birth as documented.

    “From the heart” would be “ex corde”. “Anima” means “breath”, but also “soul” (not to be confused with animum, also meaning “soul”, “life” etc.), so “ex anima” means “from the soul”. I initially thought this is some fixed expression from Catholic liturgy, but it doesn’t seem to be very common. Probably some pseudo-Catholic way of saying “from the bottom of my heart”, “with the deep conviction this is the truth” as opposed to “deliberate falsehoods meant to mislead people”.

    The Magic M: “From the heart” would be “ex corde”. “Anima” means “breath”, but also “soul” (not to be confused with animum, also meaning “soul”, “life” etc.), so “ex anima” means “from the soul”. I initially thought this is some fixed expression from Catholic liturgy, but it doesn’t seem to be very common. Probably some pseudo-Catholic way of saying “from the bottom of my heart”, “with the deep conviction this is the truth” as opposed to “deliberate falsehoods meant to mislead people”.

    In Biblical use, breath and soul have a similar meaning, in part due to Greek terms having a larger meaning than can be conveyed in English terms (I believe the appropriate Greek term here is psyche).

    In Latin use you may here anima in places such as:

    Magnificat anima mea Dominum

    “My soul doth magnify the Lord.”

    Tar and feathering as a punishment seems to have been first recorded in the Navy regulations during the reign of Richard I (according to Mr. Wikipedia). It was first used in America 1766 in Norfolk, Virginia.

    Southerners took great delight in tar and feathering abolitionists before the Civil War.

    The ‘Old West’ as you put it was never so barbaric as that.
